I have been asked to provide a sample as I have been in hospital and since leaving have not really been well following a severe bout of diahorrea. I am just wondering what is being looked for?

Microbiology, Culture and sensitivity. It means they are looking for Bacteria ans then looking for the right treatment that will kill any bacteria they find.

Not a parasite--it's a toxin caused by a bacterial overgrowth in your gut caused by antibiotics. It causes bloody diarrhea and yes, it can cause malnutrition and dehydration--the smell you mention is unique and would be recognized by anyone who has smelled it before. Mass spectrometry - not sure about the C bit though.

Just means check across a large range of ailments.
