Deep breathing is very good exercise. You can do this anytime & everywhere. It is not visible to others. Breathing is not something you do. It is something which you allow. You can do this exercise during sitting, standing and lying down. If you can maintain the ratio in between inhale & exhale then it will be very beneficial. Exhale deeply, contracting the belly. Inhale slowly as you expand the abdomen. Continue inhaling as you expand the chest. Continue inhaling as you raise the shoulders up towards your ears. Hold for a few comfortable seconds Exhale in reverse pattern, slowly. Release shoulders, relax chest, contract the belly. If you inhale for 4 seconds, you hold for 16 and exhale for 8. Do sets of 10 breathes, 3 times a day spread out through the day. Progressively increase your seconds count to develop greater lung capacity. Deep breathing delivers many of the benefits of exercise, including facilitating weight loss. One basic measure of fitness is cardiovascular capacity i.e. how much oxygen our heart and lungs can deliver to our cells. This exercise is said to be aerobic exercise which exceed our cardiovascular capacity. It burns fat for energy, an essential element in weight loss. Deep breathing reduces stress-if you are stressed, you breath in short, Deep breathing releases bodies own painkillers, into the system. This can help relieve headaches, sleeplessness, backaches and other stress related aches and pains.

Breathing is pretty easy... you do it every day. It isn't any different for DEEP breathing other than you take the time to slow the breath, be aware of it, feel it moving completely in and completely out of your lungs. There is no specific "technique" when you first get started, but you do have to realize that your body uses not just your lungs, but muscles of the diaphram to breathe so working them more than they are used to can sometimes cause some soreness--similar to what you'd have if you were doing ab crunches. There are, in yoga, some different energy raising and balancing breathing exercises... but the basics are just that... basic. In... to a slow count (however long you can make it) and out for the same count. If you find you aren't counting out as long as you are in, that's a sign you aren't expelling all the carbon dioxide from your lungs--something that can lead to fatigue. You will also find when you first start, that you will yawn alot. Your body isn't used to the extra oxygen, so hang in there. That reaction generally wears off and allows just the breathing after a few weeks at it.
As for location... you can DEEP breathe anywhere you can breathe. :) Good luck!

Deep breathing does very little in truth except to help relax your body and allow the lungs and heart to increase oxygen into the system. But the techiques and benefits given are primarily false. You can do the breathing whereever, whenever, you just need a somewhat quite atmosphere and a few minutes to breath in and out without interuption. Good Luck!

Purchase one of the several books on yoga written by a myriad of teachers/practitioners available in your nearby book shop and practice the breathing exercises in the way as mentioned there in.

Deep breathing does help me to relax a bit and I tend to do so about once a day with just a couple deep breaths (but please check with your dr or such as I'm just speaking for myself). Please remember Not to breathe too quickly as to help prevent hyperventilation. I slowly breathe in thru my nose and then slowly out thru pursed lips. After a couple of times, I just breathe regularly. It does help to a certain point.

You can do it anytime of the day.
I prefer waiting until it's quiet and using a candle to focus my energy and concentration. It clears your mind, relieves stress, and just makes you feel better.
