I am amused that some of the answers were Catholic apologists trying to deny or misdirect the problem - in other words, running interference. We get to see the process in action here.

Um, no. Where do you get your information? Source, or is this just your take on things.

Well, as has been stated multiple times...pedophilia is the wrong term. It falls under pederasty which is a homosexual problem...not child molestation.

Addtionally, there are more sexual abuse cases in the school system than in the Catholic Church. TRUTH! But the difference is, the Catholic Church can be sued as one institution where as schools are by county and everything is dealt with locally.

Also, the abuse cases that are always in the news are from 40 and 50 years ago. I'm not saying that makes it okay, but it's getting all lumped together as if it all just happened...and it didn't. Over the years there have been many children in schools, homes, neighborhoods...who have been abused and inappropriately touched with no recourse whatsoever.

There is a book out recently called Out of Bounds. It lays open the extreme problem of sexual abuse committed by coaches. According to this book it's a widespread problem...where is the outrage? Where is the media? The Catholic church is being portrayed as if it's a Catholic and/or celibate priest problem. This NOT true and it's a dangerous notion. Dangerous because it gives people a false sense of security and allows teachers and coaches to go about abusing young people.

Why is it we do not label all coaches or teachers as pedophiles but we do label all priests that way? It doesn't make any sense.

Here is an excerpt for Childhood Sexual abuse statistics:

The most commonly reported perpetrators are fathers and stepfathers. Brothers, sisters, mothers, baby-sitters, and uncles, are also among the most common abusers. Who abuses is an important piece in the question, "why do people abuse?" We don’t necessarily know why, but we do know most abusers were abused themselves. With incest perpetration being a family based sexual abuse, it can repeat itself from family member to family member, generation before generation, and those thereafter. But despite this, we know from statistics that overwhelmingly, most children who have been abused, don’t go on to abuse others.

No thank goodness! Lately due to pressure by previously abused individuals the RCC is turning out some of it's "bad eggs". One bishop in the mid-west just denounced a much respected priest without provocation by authorities (legal or ecclesiastical). Unfortunately, he had died years ago, so all the denunciation served to do was to discredit his memory and revoke his name from a memorial once named for him!
But, I know that isn't very much of a condolence for those who have been abused by clergy!

I think that both God Bless The Pope and Lawrence R are talking bigotted lies, Peados are peados for because it's underage kids they molest and abuse - theya re not homosexual, also the herteos are statistically more likely to be peados, if it was hetero peados then the hetero wouldn't get a mention which says it all
I do think the church protects peados as there's been many cases of that like the one where the church blamed the kid for leading the priest on

Do they, at least in the US there are many convicted clergy pedophiles.
But most pedophiles are not clergy.
For example these wonderful foster-parents from the UK:

Under what rock have YOU been hiding?

Several parishes are going bankrupt over this, so what are you talking about?

And yes, the cases are 20-30 years old? Get a grip: the problem is WELL on it's way to being solved.

Can you SHUT UP now?

Yes you are right,
It is a joke when a church that preaches that we must live a clean moral life and that homosexuality is wrong condones priests that are Paedophiles.
This shows how hypocritical the pope & church are and i don`t know why anyone still believes the Catholic faith

Some of the worst priests do go to prison, but are not punished enough. See the movie "Deliver us from Evil", the bad priest got 7 years in prison, but the officials who gave him a free pass got no punishment.

I was molested by a Catholic priest. Won the court case, then my lawyer severely raped me.
