You have a good point.
Sticking with what Jesus was actually preaching... "Forgive others and God will forgive you"....It was a message of mercy, not sacrifice... that's how I would make the distinction.

No, that is not what the Bible teaches. Was Jesus a true Christian, Saviour of the world. Yes he was, what happened to him, they crucified him, even Jesus said that in the world you would have tribulation but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world, According to Historians all the Apostles died horrible deaths, were they not Saved, Personally I think Christians suffer more than nonbelievers because the devil wants to punish Jesus's children. Each person saved or not, has to live out their lives as they see fit, Christ will lead you if you let him, if not then it is definitely a crap shoot. You never know what will be around the corner and if Christ is protecting you it could be painfull. At least as a Christian I know that what ever God has in store for me I can handle it and I already have won the battle. My future is secure. Have you ever been saved?? If not and you would like to be I can show you how, Pray this Prayer with me, Dear Jesus, I believe you are the son of God, I believe you came to earth to die on a cross for me to be a perfect sacrifice for my sins and rose from the grave the third day, I know and confess that I am a sinner in need of your salvation. I ask you to come into my heart now and save me, in Jesus name I Pray, Amen... If you just Prayed that Pray with a sincere heart you are now saved and Jesus lives inside your heart. Find a church, get you a Bible and start reading. Its a wonderfull world being a born again Christian. If you have questions please feel free to send me an email. Good luck to you and God Bless YOU!!

When I read the words true Christian I get a chill that run's over my whole body. I think any one that chooses to belive in God and the good book took the first step in being a true Christian. I do not understand most of the wording in the Bible but I do know this for me being a true christian means trying not to judge others, giving a helping hand, reminding you self that your chocie of words can be more painful than a slap in the face & praying and remembering that even know at times when you think life is not fair God's plan is always going to be bigger and better than your's.

Besides having this rare protection from the Master of the Universe himself, true Christians are recognizable if they emulate their heroes. Their heroes are the saints and the martyrs, remember? Those are the models of perfect living on earth. They walk barefooted, they own no property, they have left their families behind, and live off of alms. Some of them may be standing at cross roads, with a sign that says "God Bless You!" But if the sign says "Need a Job" they are not true Christians. If they manage to be persecuted for saying that God speaks to them, or that they ARE God, then they are very close to martyrdom, and they indeed are true Christians. These are the only people who really PRACTICE their religion. The others talk about it, and attend boring ceremonies.

Hello, Grace:
Jesus also says Satan will be working miracles. But the real test of discipleship is found in John 13:35:
"By this shall all [men] know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
You will recall that they were arguing who would be the greatest in Heaven, but when the Holy Spirit fell, they were in one accord.
Jesus also says the Enemy will plant false Christians in church. These will usually argue insignificant points and create disunity.
God restores us to important doctrines in a Bible code. See http://abiblecode.tripod.com
Shalom, peace in Jesus, Ben Yeshua
P.S.: 1 John 5:2 "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments."

"...and nothing by any means shall hurt you" means that, to a Christian, there is no earthly consequence that is to be dreaded. the Christian's soul is the really permanent existence. Our bodies are temporary vessels for the essence of our life. The only real peril to a Christian is losing their seat in heaven for their soul and not injury or illness to the temporary vessel. So, even though we may be sick, in prison, persecuted, or in pain, we speak joyously of the ultimate salvation of the blood of Jesus Christ.
Christians are called to be bold witnesses of the Gospel of our Lord and to not fear earthly consequence. These verse also serve to embolden the disciples and their brethren as their Lord ascends back to heaven.

Well, that's pretty easy, actually. True Christians have some defining characteristics... gullibility, irrationality, willful ignorance, self-delusion, intellectual dishonesty, hypocrisy and drooling stupidity. The REAL trick is in figuring out which ones are NOT 'true' christians... the ones who are LACKING in one or more of those defining characteristics.
Unfortunately... I can't tell you how to do that. I haven't figured it out yet. I guess I'm not discerning enough. I can't tell the difference.

Yeah...that would be the theory of the snake-handling churches.
And personally I'm all for it. In fact, I think ALL Christians should handle snakes. And indeed, if they're bitten, they weren't real Christians in the first place. What a convenient litmus test!
Because let's face it - the Bible is a package deal. You buy any of it, you buy ALL of it. Never mind that it is, of course, totally impossible to buy all of it, since it contradicts itself throughout. The point is that you can't weigh, say, John 13:35 over these passages from Mark. Yes, we'll know Jesus' true disciples by the fact that they love one another, and also by the fact that they pick up snakes, speak in tongues, drink poison and all the rest of the programme.
Nothing is much more pathetic, by the way, than some of the excuses that "Christians" come up with for denying the obvious sense of this or that Scriptural text they find awkward. Whenever the Bible mentions homosexuality, it's literal, deadly serious and applicable to our situation today; but in this instance of snake-handling, it's a "metaphor taken out of context." Sorry, but you fail. It's quite certain from the context that this passage is meant literally, and that Christians are supposed to be possessed of "magical" means of protection from physical harm. The only people who say differently are Sunday School teachers with an aversion to picking up serpents and drinking poison.

He was talking about the original apostles. Today we know a Christian by their works their behavior. This means you usually have to know them for awhile. Next a feminist can be a Christian if they follow Jesus but to follow him they must mortify all sins of the flesh and not try to justify them. For example I know abortions happen but I can never say they are ok they are sin. If I lie or take the Lord's name in vain I must hate that I did it and say sorry and try not to do it again.
