Hi. First relax it isnt as bad as the horror stories you will have been told. As you are having your tonsills out as an adult you must have been having some fairly awful sore throats anyway. After the op it just feels very sore but it gets better quickly. Once you are awake and back on the ward try very hard to drink as much as you can. i know its sore but do your best... it will help you recover quicker. When offered food take it and again do your best to eat this will help speed up the healing process and mimimise the risk of infection.

I had mine out when I was 20 (3 years ago). My surgery lasted less then 10 minutes and I was able to go home about an hour after the operation. The first 2 days were fine...days 2 through 7 I could have KILLED my doctor because I was in so much pain! Eating anything (includeing jello, popsicles, etc) burned my throat, so here is a tip get some liquid benadryl and gargle some before you eat, it really will help the food not burn so bad. Stay away from Dairy (ie: ice cream) because it will make it even harder to swallow because it makes muscus. My diet consisted mostly of water and only the noodles from ramen noodles mixed with LOTS of butter.... I ate that for about a week. I did also lose my voice for a few days and I couldn't lay on my back for about 4 weeks because swallowing was difficult... I am not going to lie, it was by far the worst pain I've ever experienced... BUT, on the good side, I have only had one sore throat since!! :-)

Don't be scared/worried it's not as bad as you think. You actually will no nothing of the operation. When you wake it will feel very strange and like there is obviously some sensation at the back of your throat. Now, i'm not going to lie, the healing process really does hurt a lot. it stings mostly - don't drink anything fizzy or orange juice - i did and DAMMMNNN that kills. Make sure you work out the right amount of painkillers you need (they will be soluble) and prepare to ask for more (if you need them) - by ordering them before you run out. And if you get anything like the same ones i did, they do thankfully work wonders. It'll be difficult to swallow, so basically very small pieces of food and don't go gulping down drinks, 'cause you guessed it, it hurts too. I'd say after about 5-7 days you'll feel it getting better, much better.
Ice cold water - an absolute GOD-SEND!! lol.
Goodluck, you'll be fine. Just take it easy.

Probably some post op, Anaesthetic drowsiness and the back of your throat will feel on fire. Until you are completely over the anaesthetic then they may give you some pain killers which will be hard to swallow initially. But I'm going from my experience of 10 years ago. It might of changed since then.

I got mine out last year I'm 18 now and I would not even wish this operation on my worst enemies.
Alot of my friends had theirs out before me and most of them were sick afterwards and puking blood so I was expecting that.
I went in and the operation lasted 20 minutes when I woke up I was feeling fine a bit woozy from the anastethic but it just felt like one of the normal sore throats I had suffered from for years and I even went out and smoked a cigarette bad I know but I thought I was fine.
I knew myself I would not be able to eat much and had myself prepared for that so that area was fine.
I went to lie down after my cigarette and drifted in and out of sleep for the rest of the day from the anastethic but I knew that was normal because I have had 3 operations previously.
I felt the anastethic and painkillers wearing off and my head, my back, my legs, my eyes basically every part of my body was sore I could barely move that pain was nothing I have ever experienced before I couldn't even swallow my throat was so sore to move your tongue is the most painful thing in the world and my pain threshold is very high.
The nurses said all this was normal but I was feeling so sorry for myself other women I met in the hospital who had the same operation were the same and recommended I drink Coca-Cola as it removes the mucus and mould from the stitches this is normal and green its disgusting but every time I took a drink of Coca-Cola it stung really bad but it did improve the mould but I was sick that night and had nothing in my stomach and I was retching all night.
My body improved on the second day after the operation so the only thing that was wrong with me was my throat and tongue were sore and I was a bit tired which is normal.
I couldn't eat properly for 2 weeks because me tongue was so sore I couldn't chew properly but amazingly enough the swallowing was okay.
I took it easy for two more weeks and the doctors said the fact I had no bad effects before the stitches healed was a very good thing.
I'm sorry for giving you all the details and making this so long but no one prepared me for it before I had the operation and I will never forget it now.
They say the older you get the worse it is but don't forget that everybody is different and can have different reactions hopefully yours is a good reaction.
The best thing since having them removed was the fact that I now and since the operation have not had a cold sore throat or an earache all of which I used to suffer nearly twice a week with before the operation.
Good luck and I hope you recover rapidly.

Don't take any notice of the "horror" stories this lot have been feeding you. There is no problems at all, bit of a sore throat but you expect that. In three days you will be fine. Had mine done last year, and i'm 53 (that's ancient is it not)

Obviously, from reading the answers...it is different for everyone.
I had mine out at 17, and it was terrible. I stayed in bed for a straight week. I only ate ice and popsicles and lost a ton of weight. I mostly slept during that time, thanks to the codeine. Friends came to visit me, but I can only vaguely remember them standing in my room.
When I was wheeled out of the hospital, I was so out of it, I was drooling...highly embarrassing for a teen (or anyone for that matter.)
You may do better though. Just don't worry too much about it!

It's definitely more difficult as an adult to have this operation. Kids get over it very quickly. It took me over two weeks before I could eat regular food. I hope it's better for you. Good luck!

It hurts, but only for a few days and you do get all the cold stuff you can handle to help with the swelling--so stock up on brothes, ice cream, sherbert and smoothie makings! They help. Good luck!
