It's driving me nuts. It keeps switching to italics by itself.

Probably the Normal style is set to use italics. Open the list of styles and select Normal, then Modify it so that it doesn't use italics.

How weird!

Most problems I've ever had with Word are resolved by correcting the document (select all and hit Ctrl-I to un-italicize), saving it, then closing it, closing Word, and shutting down the computer. When I reboot, the problem invariably seems to have corrected itself.

If you haven't yet tried that, give it a shot.

Because you have (accidentally) reset defaut to Italics.

I *believe* you may have accidentally hit +(?) while using italicised text.

In any case, go to the Help menu, and look-up how to set default text style and it will tell you how to reset the default to whatever you want.
