5.0L V8? right? or is it the 4.6L V8?
well i think you should be able to add MOST,-NOT ALL mods to your LTC as you would to a Ford Mustang V8,- they are the same engine....
I's start with Cold air intake, and free flowing exhaust... then maybe a perfomance chip, some better spark plugs, wires...
im not sure, i dont go much further...
BEst Wishes!!! Nice ride i'll bet, i had a 1995 LTC!!!
Cool 4.6 V8, cool....as i mentioned above, peace. "/ JOe

This is a very heavy car. Curb weight is 4035 pounds. So the first thing I would do is anything to shed some weight.
This car has a small 4.6 liter V8 putting out only 190 horse power and 260 foot-pounds torque. Not much motor for such a heavy car.
Don't expect miracles from this car. It was never designed to be a performance car. It is a lazy boy recliner on wheels. If you want a performance car, you need to start with a performance car. Sell it and get an old Mustang or Camaro.
Most of these already came with dual exhaust. So exhaust mods won't gain you all that much. Changing the exhaust might gain you about 15 horse power, but will cost a lot. If you consider this, don't go cheap. Maybe a universal system from Magna Flow. Finding a custom fit system may be difficult.
Reprogramming the computer will get you another 10 - 15 horsepower. This is also expensive.
Cold air kits give only marginal performance increases for the money. Consider this. With a V8, you gain about 1 horsepower for every 10 degrees you cool the intake air. The air cleaner draws its air from a port outside the engine compartment so the incoming air is already relatively cool. A cold air kit will NOT cool the air any cooler than the ambient outside air temperature. So even if you can cool the incoming air 50 degrees, you gain a measly 5 horsepower. Then your exhaust gas recirculation system cancels this cooling effect out. Don't waste your money with cold air kits. All show, no go.
Replace the camshafts. This will be expensive because you have more than one. Comp Cams makes sets for the 4.6, for about $1200
Your best bang for the buck would be a Nitrous oxide kit. You could put in a dry kit that will give you 50 - 100 more horsepower for about $300 - $500. For a little more you could install a wet kit that will give you 100 to 150 + more horsepower. With a wet kit, you would risk breaking parts.
Consider that this car is over 17 years old. Any serious modifications will require major refurbishment to the drive train or you will be continuously breaking parts.

Town cars are great! Yours being a 91 would be the first year with the more advanced 4.6 overhead cam v8. One easy mod is to get dual exhaust which will boost your horsepower by about 20 to 25. Another main thing to watch for is to make sure your air suspension is in good shape as this greatly affects ride quality. Good Luck!

For the most performance a cold air intake with a K&N air cleaner, free flowing exhaust and a performance programmed computer chip would be worth 15 -20 hp.

You probably need a new transmission soon. The same thing happened with my dad's Mercury and left us stranded out of town when the transmission blew. So if you have money for a new transmission, I would look into it before it causes you some bigger problems. Have it looked at first by a mechanic, because it may just need a transmission overhaul too. Good luck.
