I want to find my Great-Grandad's WWI medals, they were issued to his widow in 1923, but now they're not in the family at all.
Is there any way to find out whether a collector has got them, and if so, who?
If I found them, how much do you reckon it would cost to buy them back? There's three-1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
He fought in the Canadian Army, but was from Leeds, UK, and that's where his widow was when she received the medals, plus a scroll and plaque, which are also missing.

You can try posting at: The Great War Forum

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?

Uniforms, arms, insignia, equipment, medals. Section.

If you know his Number, Rank, Name and name of Unit there is another website where you can post that you are looking for the items, you have to pay to post on the site.

There is also the chance that the set could have been broken up and sold seperately.

Depending on his unit and rank, and place of service they set could be worth from 90 British Pounds up to 600+ British Pounds.

There are NO official replacement sets available from the British / Canadian Government, once the original set was signed for that was it.

They could be anywhere in the world with a collector or even destroyed!! In the 1980's many British War Medals were melted down for there silver content.

Contact the MOD. I know there is a place where you can get copies of the medals as my dad did this for his fathers medals. They won't be originals mind, so you must be aware of this (by this I mean, on the original medals, around the edge of the coin (not the flat faces) it had the name, rank and number of the solider it was awarded to and I think the serving regiment). On the copies, it will not have this, and they do not put this info onto the copies (there is a reason, but I can't remember.) Hope this helps.

They are not worth much as all personnel who fought in WW1 were issued with these medals. I think they sell for about £20 if he had also had medals for bravery/gallantry they would be worth a bit more if sold together depending on what medals they were. Don't think they will be easy to trace start by finding out who had them last and who they gave or sold them to. These medals should have the soldiers name and rank stamped into the edges of the medals unless someone has ground the edges down to erase them. Sorry I can't help you further.

What the hell are the thumbs down for?
Nothing I've said here are offensive , inappropriate or wrong.
