I read daily on Q/A where non-believes attempt to tie some atrocity that some lunatic has committed, to Christianity. Now I ask you this: To be a Buddhist one imitates the teachings and life of Buddha. To be a Muslim, one follows the teachings of Mohammed. To be a Christian, one follows the teachings of Christ. Now considering so many who are non-believers are great at picking out obscure bits of text, which of you can do this? Who among you is able by scripture, to quote 1 verse, just one little verse where Christ taught, encouraged or advocated harming ANYONE, weither it be an enemy, your best friend, your ex wife who ever. Can you show just one verse where Jesus stated any response other than to forgive, to love, to help, to care, to fix, to heal? If you can not, then how can you claim that someone doing something completely opposite of what Christ taught, can still be considered a follower of Christ, a Christian? Please don’t waist our time by saying, “they did it in the name of Christianity” that don’t fly, If I were to go and shoot the president of another country and then claim “ I did this in the name of America” no one would buy that either. Also any where Christ taught that if YOU the individual sins it would be better for you to cut off your OWN hand, or your own Eye that is speaking to the individual not telling them to do that to someone else.

Mr. Question Everything:
You are (like many ignorant readers have done throughout history) twisting a scripture to make it say what you wish it said.
1st: you can't read one scripture out of context with everything else Jesus said. That is your most careless mistake.
2nd: Jesus never encouraged anyone to hurt anyone. There is a BIG difference between telling someone to arm themselves and telling them to hurt someone. There is a BIG difference between self defense and being on the offensive.
3rd: Jesus REBUKED Peter for cutting off the ear of one of the men who came to arrest Jesus. Here's another scripture for you: Jesus said, "He who lives by the sword will die by the sword." Through this, Jesus taught that it is unwise to resort to violence to solve your problems. Doesn't that balance out and eliminate the chance that Jesus wanted the disciples to arm themselves for the sake of hurting others?
4th: Your statement that Jesus was planning for the disciples to be armed when he was arrested is totally ludicrous!! If He wanted for that to happen, don't you think He would have known how many people would come for him and have an army waiting? If He was looking to fight the Romans, He would have been ready for them!
Your entire argument doesn't add up and is completely inconsistent with fact and what the Bible actually says. It shows your ignorance on the subject. You might want to "Question" your own logic.

My problem is when people do NOT follow the words of Christ, but the rest of the bible. Jesus was all about love, and forgiving. I've rarely met a "Christian" willing to forgive, instead, they quote a line from the bible, that doesn't involve Jesus mind you, and tell me why I, or some one else, is going to hell.
Usually, these quotes are from the Old Testament. How ever, when quoted something back from the old testament, these are the first people that will tell me "Oh, that's from the Old Testament. Jesus changed things so that doesn't count".
This is not 5 minutes after they told me I'm going to hell, with a quote from the Old Testament.
Many, many, many bad things were don't in the Name of Christianity. Does that mean these people were very good Christians? No. I could kill a kitten in the name of Koko the Gorilla. Does that mean Koko the Gorilla would have wanted me to kill the kitten? No. Koko loved kittens. God and Jesus loves us all, not some of us, all of us. Regardless of any thing. And I bet, if they exist, that they are really tired of people killing in their names.
You can do any thing in the name of something. That doesn't mean your doing it right.

The problem with your question is that Christians don't follow the teachings of Christ. They follow a self-contradictory book that was put together by religious leaders of a small cult so that they could more easily control their "flock", and get them to spread their disease through whatever means they could (including oppression, murder, terrorism, child abuse, and many other methods). If Christians truly followed the teachings of Christ, there wouldn't have been so many atrocities in the name of Christianity. If Christ still existed, he would be appalled at how his teachings have been perverted to be a mantra of hate.
Edit: Ah, poor meanolmaw, the thing is, those who don't believe in the Christian Dogma aren't wrong. Anyone who looks at it rationally and with an open mind can see that clearly. Your attempt to try to frighten people into believing as you do with the threat of an angry Jesus/God is a form of terrorism and it sickens me.

I can't, but my problem has never been with the teachings of Christ. It's with the teachings of his perverted and decidedly evil father, the 1 you claim is the creator of all things, that turn my stomach.
Read the OT and think about it. It really doesn't matter if you believe Christ atoned for man's sins and fulfilled OT prophecy in the NT. Your "God" is still an admitted misanthrope and purveyor of all things wicked. He's condoned, encouraged, and committed unspeakable atrocities against man. The OT is filled with these accounts.

I'm not going to bother looking it up for you but I can give you TWO
When he turned over the money changers stalls.
And when he said something like " Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." I believe it's in Matthew
edit: Oh and of course you can come up with different meanings to these things but that's the point. People can take and twist things to suit them any time they want.

Luke 14:26: If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
Matthew 10:34: Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.
You haven't really read the bible, have you?

Well with me it depends a lot on the motivation. Many of those lunatics are motivated by religion.
Example:
Read Mein Kampf. Hitler directly says that he is doing "the Lord's work" with respect to the Jews. So he was motivated by the fact that he was Catholic. Now it is true that he may have still done it without religion, its just that religion makes it easier.
Andrea Yeates is another good example. If she had not been a fundy, she may have sought help for the voices she was hearing instead of drowning her kids. The idea that God could suggest such a thing has Biblical precedence and therefore she was unable to tell that she had serious problems.

John 8, 7
"So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." (King James)
Unless you take this as an implicit admission that it is downright impossible any man lead an exemplary life without sin (which would be an interesting approach, to say the least), he is in fact asking the true paragons of virtue to resort to violence first.

To give just ONE example...
Christ taught his disciples to turn their backs on people who did not agree to follow him, telling them to "shake the sand from their shoes". Callous disregard for others based on a sense of exclusivity and belief that you alone are right is the basis for the majority of wars that have ever happened.
In other words, Christ directly taught his discplies to undertake acts calculated to lead to war.
You have to hold people responsible for the consequences of their teachings, not just the words themselves.
