Do you mean a blended family, like you and your significant other both have kids from a previous relationship? If that's the case.... to me (and this is from my own experience) is to treat all the kids the same. Don't let it matter if they live with you or are just there for visitation. My son and stepsons are all treated the same.... same rules, privileges, punishments, etc. I don't want my son to feel bad because when my boyfriends kids come over they get special treatment and get away with things he doesn't. I really feel like that will help make us more of a family. There is no special treatment so nobody feel left out.

If that's not what you meant then I can't help you because I do not know what you mean by joint family.
