no, you do not have the rights to the dog. Instead, stop over and discuss the matter with the neighbor. Tell them that you would be happy to accept the dog if they would like to give it to you.

The best thing for you to do is to talk to the neighbour, explain the situation to him. I'm pretty sure that he sees your generosity and has taken advantage of the situation. If your feeding and watering the dog he doesn't have too. There's no money coming out of his pocket. Ask him if you can adopt the dog and or offer to pay him a small fee. If he doesn't agree I'd stop feeding him and by no means would I buy a dog house. Don't get me wrong, I know your trying to help the dog.

I wouldn't call the shelter unless you are prepared to never see the dog again. They won't allow you to take ownership unless you've put in an application and have passed their tests. Many people have been turned down at shelters after applying for adoptions.

Good luck, I hope you find a way to keep him.

Unfortunately, you do not have any legal rights to the dog. But sounds like your neighbor doesn't really want him so why not talk to your neighbor and see if they will let you keep him? If your neighbor refuses and continues to neglect the dog, call your local animal cruelty officer (most towns have them in connection with either the police department or animal shelter) and file a report with them on what's happening. Make sure they know you want the dog if it is removed from its current home. Good luck and thank you for taking care of this puppy. I'm glad he has someone looking out for him.

Poochie will still belong to the neighbor unless he gives/sells Poochie to you.

Explain to the neighbor that you see that he is way, way too busy to pay attention to Poochie and would he consider selling him to you for a modest sum - say, $25 - $50 - or even $100.

If neighbor balks at selling the dog to you then explain to him that Poochie comes into your yard uninvited and it's owner's responsibility to fix the fence so that Poochie can't dig his way through. But you'd rather just own the dog if he would be willing to sell him to you.

If Poochie is lucky enough to be sold to you - and I keep saying SOLD - not GIVEN - you will need to draw up a bill of sale (copied from a law book from the local library is fine) outlining that Poochie is now your legal property - so Neighbor can't come back and say that you stole his dog.

Make sure you have a receipt, bill of sale and all terms and conditions spelled out - even for a $25 puppy.

I hope you can swing this - you sound like a nice family for this puppy.

No, sorry to say, you do not have rights to this dog. I would speak to your neighber about it. I would let him know that you are willing to adopt the dog if he continues to neglect it and that you have already spoken to animal control about the situation. You may want to mention police involvement as well on animal cruelty charges. Either your neighbor will relent and allow you to adopt the dog, or he will step up and begin caring for it...in which case, both parties are happy.

1st off I was in the same situation.

"Their" pup did the same thing.
He eventually got hit by a car because of "their" neglect.
My husband and myself took care of the pup and had his leg amputated and now he is ours. The neighbors claimed to the vet Dr. that it was not theirs at all. LIARS!!

My suggestions are, speak to the neighbors first before spending any money on this dog.
You have a big heart and mean well, but they can turn around and say that you "stole" the pup.
If they say NO, then report them to your local animal control center.
Good luck, and let me know how it works out.
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!

One way to get the onwer to reliquish the dog to you, Give him a bill, for:
1. food, say 20 a week
2 water, 5.00 a week
3 shelter 25.00 a day.
add all of it up for the total tme you have cared for the puupy, give him the bill for it, and let him know you will take him to small claims court to collect the money.
Get the bill as high as you can. He will be more than happy to hand over the pup.

You should tell the owner how fond you are of the dog and ask first if he would be willing to part with it. If he See's you are taking care of it already you shouldn't have a problem.

Yes,
Contact your local animal control and tell them that your neighbour is neglecting his/her dog and you want to take it instead of them taking it to the shelter!

You can also talk to the neighbour and ask them if you can have it... you are great for helping the poor animal!
Good luck

I have the same problem with a neighbours cat, the poor thing is so neglected, its skin is sore its always limping e.t.c
It recently let me stroke it which was a real breakthrough. when he trusts me enough I will be treating him for his conditions and taking care of him as my own.
I don't care what the opinions are of the people that are neglecting their animals.
