I heard it everywhere from people who are atheists. Also my friend say this thing when he is surprised or when he sees something that is amusing. I'm too afraid to ask him this myself because I don't want to intimidate him or anything like that.

It has become an expression. It has no meaning to non-believers so they use it easily, probably without thinking.

Habit. I very seriously doubt that you would intimidate your friend if you ask him this question. But really why ask..you know that it is just a habit so why make a big deal over it? My husband says for someone who doesn't believe in god I sure do say it a lot when we make love.

Since I was raised by a christian who was a recovering catholic and another christian that was a recovering jew, I dare say my language is peppered with religious invectives. Some in english, some in yiddish. Its my families way of speaking more than a reflection of my personal beliefs, and no insult to believers is implied.

We were the part of God, are and will a part of Almighty God for ever. When nothing will remain in this nasty world, to whom you'll call ,you nears and dears wouldn't no more, then who will be with you. Only God.So, it is universal truth, that Almighty Omnipresent God was there, is there and will be there forever. That's why we remeber him and call "OH MY GOD" in any language. No other words.

It is because in thier heart they believe Romans 1:19-22 says God makes himself known to all men. Noone is an athiest. When they hit thier thumb with a hammer they dont say Buddah damn it they say God. Jesus christ is used as a curse word because the bible says he was made a curse for us Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the claw, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree, It is in thier heart and comes out of thier mouth in sorrow or distress

I spent a career in The Army, and working offshore. I hear it constantly. 'Jesus Christ', or damning God.
Why? Why would you curse someone you don't believe in? I have more than once been fed up with it, and stated that they are cursing God with the very breath that God gave them. sometimes for effect, I will back up, and they will ask me what I am doing, and I tell them that I want to stand clear for when they are hit by lightning.
