I know how you feel, I have the same thing. I've learned to overcome depression over the years, is hard but you can do it.. You need to learn how to use your brain and not focus to much on your inside feelings..Medicine helps a lot, but it will not cure you..... IS really hard, it took me years to understand it....But Your main thing is not to focus on your feelings, don't pay mine to it and after a while you feel better.. You keep this up and soon you will feel strong.. and then you will know that you are stronger then the depression and you can take control over it.. I mean imagine if everyone went by their feelings, this world would be really mess up...... Just try this and I hope this helps. Try getting a boyfriend or a girlfriend if you don't have one at the moment.... That usually helps a lot............

Wow you're asking a loaded question!
What may work for me may not work for you, everyone is different. The best thing is to discuss it with your doctor and figure out a plan of action.
I've battled with depression most of my life, for as long as I can remember actually. Sometimes I get so low it scares even me, I've done self mutilation and tried to OD, but I'm somewhat better now. And that has come from support from my friends and family.
I've had two close friends who did the most impact on my condition. One told me once, "Think of the little things in life that bring you the most happiness. The things that make every day worth living, the things that you'd miss if they were gone." Such examples are, for me, the smiles and hugs I get from my god children every day when I get to see them, turning on the radio and finding my favorite song is on, same for my favorite tv show. Curling up on the couch and watching a good movie, running across an old friend. Having an old friend just show up at my house. Eating my favorite food. Going to Big Lots and finding John Frieda for only $2.50 instead of $6.40 like at Wal-Mart! Yeah!
Just little things that make my day, you know?
Don't get me wrong, there are still days where even those little things don't help. Days where I don't want to (and sometimes don't) get out of bed. Those days, I just ride it out the best I can. I used to take these herbal mood stabilizers called Happy Campers (funny name, no?) but they gave me headaches.
The best way I think, and if I had the money I would do it, would be to talk with a doctor or a homeopathic... person (can't think of the correct term).
Or just surround yourself with things you love.

I think it depends on the kind of depression you are talking about...There is clinical where you are depressed and need meds to help you out, there is situational which is about the things going on in your life and won't last long term. Many people try to find things to do in the times they feel down...take a walk or start a new hobby, taking pictures of nature...scrapbooking.

diet and exercise. fish oil pills are the easiest change to make. everyone is different, so diet/exercise may not help so much, but you need to optimize them so you can narrow the problem down. (the idea here is that you are sensitive to something in your diet that most people don't notice) if you get stuck on research, email me. research all of these: (also search with the word depression added in)
diet, good fats/bad fats, omega-3-6-9 ratio, fish oil, acid/alkaline diets, dehydration, carbohydrate addiction, candida overgrowth, MSG labelling, glutamate cascade, mild sleep disorder, tongue thrust
i like this book, "from fatigued to fantastic" by jacob teitelbaum, M.D. He has a website.
also acu-cell.com has good info on vitamins and minerals.
get a whole bunch of exercise, most of it intense cardio. also work on posture/strength training with yoga or pilates or something

I suffered from Dysthymia for 18 years with constant suicidal ideation and a range of other symptoms. The advice below comes from years of research, thousands spent on therapy and life experience. I want you to understand before I start that you need to take each point of this advice one at a time and gradually integrate them into your life. Don’t!!!!!!
- Try to integrate them all at once because you’ll fail and be worse off
- Get defeated and quit on the whole thing if you have a bad day
- Expect miracle results because the changes come on gradually.
If you follow the advice below as best you can for a few months you should see a significant improvement in your symptoms.
1) Diet, Supplementation and Exercise
Before looking at the mental factors that cause depression it is worth dealing with the physical to ensure that you are in the best possible shape to integrate the other techniques that I’ll suggest.
There is a big mind body connection in everybody and so if you are not treating your body in the right way then this can cause and exacerbate a depressive illness.
Diet:
Good diet = Fruit, Vegetables, Wholegrain foods etc.
Try to keep away from high sugar foods (they lead to energy spikes followed by dives which leads to higher stress levels). Also I’ve found that avoiding most junk foods (at least during the week) has had a beneficial affect on me.
Supplementation:
Omega 3 Fish Oils with a high EPA content (EPA content very important).
The best source I’ve found on the Internet is www.mind1st.co.uk (there is also a .com version). I’ve noticed a definite positive affect from taking fish oils and there is a lot of research to back this up (also on mind1st as well as other websites).
Exercise:
I run 2-3 times a week for 20-30 minutes and this has had a very significant affect on lowering my stress levels. Any cardiovascular exercise that is moderate to high intensity should quickly show a noticeable affect.
2) 7-11 Breathing
Breathe in to the count of 7 and out more slowly to the count of 11. The breaths should be comfortable (i.e. not straining to reach the numbers).
This stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and literally forces your body to relax. This technique works with absolutely everybody (no exceptions).

3) Less introspection time
Keep busy and distract yourself from your negative thoughts no matter how hard it seems. Meet up with friends, family, throw yourself into housework, studying, your job etc. Make yourself so busy that your internal voice doesn’t have time to worry about the past, the state of your life etc because it is too busy stressing about other things.
4) Changing your focus
You need to take time each day to change your focus. The brain is essentially a machine that needs to be taught what to focus on. If you persist with the techniques below your brain will eventually start focussing automatically on more positive things.
3 times a day get yourself to write down:
-5 funny things that have happened in your life
-5 things that you have achieved
-5 reasons why you should be grateful
-5 happy memories from the past (there are some if you look hard enough)
-Something that you can look forward to today.
If you can’t think of anything then make sure there is something e.g. – Something nice for dinner, watch a film you’ve been meaning to see etc.
5) Thinking and explanatory styles
I’ll recommend some books below that go into more detail than me on this.
A lot of depression has to do with how you think about yourself, others, the world around you and things that happen to you. Depressives always draw negative conclusions about themselves, their past, their life and their experiences. In addition they have a tendency to make huge assumptions and believe that they are 100% accurate (I know I used to do this and many of these assumptions now appear hilariously absurd to me).
One of the best ways to deal with depression is to attempt to balance out negative thoughts and explanations with evidence. This leads to a number of interpretations of a situation some of which are a lot more positive than your initial thought.

sometimes you might have to go to a DR and take antidepressants. Try exercise first though it can work some if you do it regularly
