We want to move out of London, and are prepared to commute for up to 1 hour 20 door to door into central London for work. Maximum we can spend is £220k on a min 2 bed house. Where would you recommend? Need good schools, good transport links, a generally nice area.

Tunbridge Wells, 3rd best place in the country to live apparently..!! Been here all my life, house prices not too bad if you hunt around etc... 40-50 mins to London on train, same to the coast...! :) Good selection of the standard high-street stores, 30-40 mins by car to Lakeside or Bluewater.

Has bowling, multiplex leisure complex etc...

The Harwich and Dovercourt area in North Essex is very quiet, with okay shops, schools etc. It's about 70 miles from London, there's a station, about 1hr 30 mins on the normal trains to Liverpool Street, but a lot of people park at Manningtree and get the Inter-City which is a bit quicker, or change there.
House prices are still amazingly cheap, which is the main thing, older 3 bed terraces still well under £200k. Do a property search and see what you think.

Welwyn Garden City, or Hatfield for cheaper houses (still nice!), WGC is a bit more expensive for houses, you can go on bus to school in the morning around 8-8:30. Both have great transport with local taxi's, train stations, bus routes. Although WGC is a nicer area- a bigger town centre, John Lewis, Waitrose and Sainsbury's and Tesco 5 minutes away, also the Howard Centre (just a normal shopping centre), but Hatfield does have a cinema (it's only 10 minutes away!). Something else I learned, is WGC pay less tax than Hatfield because Hatfield has a town council or something... =]

EDIT: From WGC it takes under half an hour to get into central London and from Hatfield about half an hour.

Cambridge has rail links to Liverpool St and Kings Cross although you might not be able to find somewhere to buy on that budget in the city centre, there are plenty of nice surrounding villages. The schools are great in the area too. Meldreth/Royston on the Kings Cross line are nice as is Whittlesford on the Liverpool St line. Journey time is around 45 mins - 1 hour

surrey is the obvious choice but very expensive. Dorking has great schools and easy access to central London but again expensive. West sussex is only a few miles outside of Dorking but definately cheaper more for your money and still easy acces to London good luck

Farnborough. Fab fast rail links to London and it's just ouside the Surrey borders, into Hampshire, so the housing is a bit more reasonably priced.

Essex . Rayleigh, Rochford. Billericay is ideal except for the house prices..
