Well, technically the sun and the earth each orbit about their common center of mass but since the sun is much more massive than the earth that point is pretty close to earth. General Relativity is the theory of gravitation and it claims that gravity is the distortion of the geometry of space-time caused by the presence of matter and/or energy. The effect of this warping of space-time is that the earth is effectively traveling in a straight line through warped space around the sun. Cool, huh?

conservation of angular momentum and gravity together produce a stable periodic motion called an orbit. the other planets are far enough away that they don't perturb the earth's orbital motion significantly (as the force of gravity is proportional to 1/distance^2). gods as usual, explain nothing about nature.

Gravity. But the reasons why the earth and other planets and stars maintain their positions is not totally known, for sure. Even many of Einstein's theories are now being questioned.

Although, this question is out our expectations.Even then I'll try to satisfy you thru a sholka in Shrimad Bhagvad Gita,in which Lord Shri Krishna says to Arjun. He(Lord) explains"MATTAH PARTARAM NANYATIKICHINADASTI
DHANANJAYA. MAYEE SARVIDAM PROTAM SUTRAY MANIGANA IV." (sholka#7 Bhagvad Gyan).means:- O Arjun, No truth is better than me. Every thing is depend on me,just like all the pears are tied in a single thread.Only his great power holds the whole system of universe.

Perhaps you do not recognize the gravity of the situation, Jesus is the force that holds all things together. The earth is so perfectly placed that it is the only planet where solar eclipse are visitable, the only planet with a clear atmosphere, the only planet where one could look in the sky and say: WOW GOD THE UNIVERSE YOU MADE IS GREAT!!

The earth is in just the right place, not too close not too far. It has a moon of the right size and distance to support tides and a moon with no magnetic field so as not to interfere with earths magnetic fied necessary to hold the atmosphere and help with life.

The earth is where it is because of the creative design of God, It is a wonderful design, but also partly a broken design due to sin in the world and the suffering pain and death speaks of the need for a redeemer and savior and to look to the great Designer and Savior Jesus Christ

LOL... whirlingmerc thinks that it's a miracle that we find ourselves (life) on a planet that is capable of sustaining life. What a hoot. Yo... whirlingmerc... if we found ourselves on a planet that was NOT capable of sustaining life... now THAT would be a miracle.

Anyway... some christians will tell you that 'god' keeps the earth in place... but that idea has come under so much criticism lately (from 'those sane people'), that they had to change the name of the theory from 'God did it' to 'Intelligent Earth-Suck'.

Well, it's just a theory .... but it's a 500 trillion ton tether line tied around the Equator. Naw, I'm just kiddin' ya. The real theory is ... gravity.

One small correction to JamesB - the Earth is not following a straight line, it's following a geodesic. Close enough, though.
