Reduplication is seen in many Australian place names and it usually indicates a plural. In the local language, "wagga" means "crow" and "wagga wagga" means "many crows". Most but not all Australian languages use reduplication for plurals.

I didn't know you could, but I would assume its a nickname type thing...and two syllables sound better than four and are still better than one...so thats why you don't shorten the others. Plus Gin is a drink, Gin Gin is a place.

The only good reason is that no one would know what you were talking about if you referred to Woy or Gin but they do know what you are talking about when you mention Wagga.
