I have a cross between a border collie and a labrador, very loyal and playful dog and hardly ever barks. he is so loyal he follows me upstairs to the bathroom and sits outside waiting till i come out, lol. i also have a young child and they play constantly together but the second i think the dog may be getting too excited i call him over and he sits beside me.
Got him when he was 1 year old, and has always listened attently. They are a medium sized dog so they are not too small and not too big. Thats what i would recommend. But every dog and every family is different best of luck in finding the right dog for you.

Even a mixed breed can have the right temperament to be your best dog. Read a book called Succesful dog Adoption, it has a great section on testing dogs for the family. Any breed can have good and bad and normal and abnormal dogs. Labs normally are friendly. love to swim and fetch balls but some are none of the above. I've met a few nasty Labs and goldens and know a Golden who comes to our dog park who hates water and balls. He doesn't play with other dogs and is not very social either. Dogs need fences too even in the country, esp if they are not neutered, they will take off.

you haven't provided enough information to give you a good breed for your family. this is a very important decision and should be made only when you have all the facts.\

do you have time to brush it everyday?
no-stay away from long haired breeds
yes- labradoodles are great family dogs, st.bernards, maltese

do you have time to exercise it for at least an hour a day? (seriously)
no- go for smaller toy breeds they are great for indoor activity and can be worn out my throwing a ball
yes- labs, spaniels, weimeriner all great energetic dogs

how much can you afford to pay in food per week?
not alot- go for smaller or toy breeds most only eat 1/4 cup of food a day
decent amount- bigger dogs can eat up to 4-5 cups of food per day.

it is important to pick the right breed for you and your family do research on a breed when you find one you like. too many people these days jump the gun and get the wrong breed and end up miserable with a dog they can't stand. they dispose of said dog and the dog ends up in a shelter. i've seen this happen more times than i can count on bones. so please for your happiness and the dogs take your time and choose wisely. good luck and i hope you find your perfect dog!

I can't say this is the "best," since the best breed depends a lot on you, but I had a wonderful Springer Spaniel for 13 years. She was just so loving and loyal that it was hard to believe. She was playful with us kids when we were young, and calm with the adults. She was a perfect dog for our family and I feel so lucky to have been able to spend 13 years of my life with her.

Of course, look into the breed (and all breeds suggested) on your own as well to make sure it's the right breed for you. One person's "best' might be another person's "worst."

Before you decide on a breed......you have to decide other things

where are you going to keep it? Do you have fenced yard? If not, can you put up a fenced kennel area? How big? Is it going to live in the house most of the time?

How many foxtails and burrs are on your property?

Are you going to have any livestock?

Is their a creek or pond on your property?

Are there coyotes around? Great horned owls?

Then... general size of dog...type of coat

How much experience do you have training a dog?

Do you want the dog just as a pet? Or are your intetested in obedience, agility, ????

Make a list.....it will help you narrow your search

I would say you should rescue a dog from a kennel. You have no idea how many beautiful, smart, loyal dogs have been abandoned and are desperately looking for a family to adopt them. Besides the fact that you'll have a wonderful dog, you'll feel even better knowing that you've made a good deed. and saved him from a miserable existence.

Labs and retrievers are always good loyal dogs also Huskys are a good breed as well. if you were looking for smaller dogs you could always go with like wiener dog or something of that nature. if you guys cant decide what breed to pick why don't you go to your local shelter and see what they have a lot of times they will have dogs that are housebroken and are used to other pets and even kids but their owners just couldn't keep them anymore. good luck!
