Inflammation of a tendon can also cause this but the only way to find out for sure what is going on is to have this further evaluated by your doctor to see what they think is going on.

It sounds like what we in Australia call foot spurs, The are in the middle of the heel, inside and are quite painful. (remember on the terminator when he was walking as a silver type skeleton, and there was a ball at the back of the foot, then another small bone then the metatarcils the long bones leading to the toes), well thats where the pain is coming from, my best advise to you is stay off it as much as possible and elevate, if the pains too bad, take some panadol and if it doesn't go away see your doctor, who can refer you to a orthapedic surgeon for him/her to have a look, Goodluck to you and I hope you feel better soon!!!

Is it really constant, or worse when you get up? It's common to have plantar fasciitis on one side (also sometimes on both).

Quotations from the "family doctor" web site:

"If you have pain in your heel when you stand up for the first time in the morning, you may have plantar fasciitis. Most people with plantar fasciitis say the pain is like a knife or a pin sticking into the bottom of the foot. After you've been standing for a while, the pain becomes more like a dull ache. If you sit down for any length of time, the sharp pain will come back when you stand up again."

"If you walk or run a lot, cut back a little. [...] If you have either flatfeet or a high arch, ask your doctor about using [...] arch supports. [...] If you are overweight, losing weight can help [...] If your job involves standing on a hard floor or standing in one spot for long periods, place some type of padding on the floor where you stand.[...] Stretching exercises for your foot are important. (see website below for excercises).

There are too many unknown factors to even make a guess. Why not have it checked by your family MD or clinic?
