I want to go with my husband and our 13 year old daughter to Oz for a holiday. Any advice on best place to head for, how long, best route/airline etc. Thanks

I'm not on any particular budget - and we love doing all the normal things - beach, eating out, site-seeing. We are open to anything.

Not sure where you are flying from.
But Cairns http://www.welcometocairns.com.au has an international airport so can fly in direct from almost anywhere.
Tropical north Queensland. http://www.tropicalaustralia.com.au
My cousin, wife and his 12 yr & 8 yr old daughters just came over for a holiday this week. They did Brisbane and Cairns.
Since I live in Cairns I'll give you my tips.
The Great Barrier Reef is awesome and NOT to be missed. Great Barrier Reef -
Main operators are :: http://www.greatadventures.com.au and http://www.quicksilver-cruises.com Also for something different do the http://www.scubadoocairns.com or http://www.seawalker.com.au
A day trip out to Green island - Otherwise you can go out on the Outer Barrier Reef on their platform for lunch.
Most 'tourism' operators will do pick ups from your accommodation.
The skyrail takes you up to the rainforest village of Kuranda. http://www.kuranda.org - or take the skyrail up one way and train back down to the city. Kuranda Scenic Railway http://www.ksr.qr.com.au Great Australian Butterfly Sanctuary in Kuranda, http://www.australianbutterflies.com
See all the Aussie animals at the Cairns Zoo - http://www.wildworld.com.au and/or Hartley's Creek Crocodile Farm - http://www.crocodileadventures.com

Port Douglas is about a 50 min drive from Cairns city – worth it for the scenery.

Also every Saturday on the Cairns Esplanade is market day, a showcase of local quality stalls as well as local entertainment artists as they showcase their talent. - Worth going .. then spending the rest of the day at the lagoon there. Even great swimming there at night. it's 10pm here and we've just got home from swimming there. Cairns Central has awesome shopping - especially for a 13 year old.

Other places I love to visit is Morton Island. A short boat trip out of Brisbane for a day trip or over-night – it’s wonderful, you can feed some wild dolphins at night!
http://www.tangalooma.com or http://www.dolphinwild.com.au or http://www.moreton-island.com Great resorts and plenty of activities to keep you busy.

The Gold Coast beaches and theme Parks are always a hit with the kids. http://www.theme-parks.com.au So much to do, beaches are breathtaking, there's also Sea world, Dreamworld, Movie world and Wet 'n Wild.
The Australian Outback Spectacular Dinner and Show is worth it too http://www.outbackspectacular.com.au

Hope this has given you a few ideas
Enjoy yourselves whatever you decide.

Cairns -Barrier Reef & tropical rainforests

Alice Springs -Uluru, Standley Chasm

Sydney - Harbour & Blue Mountains including Jenolan Caves & Katoomba

Canberra -National Capital. - Plenty of free stuff

Melbourne - Gippsland, Great Ocean Road

Adelaide - wine growing regions.

All these places have websites, many in fact, devoted to them.

You can get air fares from the Qantas or other airline sites.

Ok. I will tell you what myself and family did for our trip in Australia. (we are family of 2 adults and then 2 sons aged at time 15 and 11) We all had a fabulous time.
First of all sit down together and discuss exactly where you would like to go in Australia and research the areas to see what's on offer. Trip advisor is excellent for researching hotels and resorts you may stay in.
We flew with Qantas and booked our holiday via Thomas cook with Qantas holidays. It costed us 10580 pounds for the four of us for a trip of just over 24 days. That included flights, excursions and many meals.
This was what we did:
London - Bangkok (in transit)
Bangkok - Sydney
In Sydney we stayed at Holiday Inn, Darling harbour which was a nice family friendly hotel. We did trips to Blue Mountains on a coach which was fabulous. We also did the bridge climb (twilight is best as you see day and night!), visits to Manley beach and Bondi!, Shopped in the malls and went up centre-point tower. Sydney is a wonderful and clean city!
Sydney - Melbourne
Here we stayed with friends in Ballarat. lovely place with a Gold mine. Loved it.
Melbourne - Ayers Rock
No trip to Australia is complete without a trip to see this fantastic Rock also known as Uluru. We saw sunrise and had breakfast. WE did the sounds of silence dinner which was wonderful dining under the stars having watched the sun set over the rock (book UK side as it gets booked up!) then we saw Olgas and did the valley of the winds walk.
Ayers Rock - Cairns
This was just beautiful with picturesque beaches. We stayed in Palm Cove at Novotel. we did the outer reef day trip on the catamaran and a trip to Cape Tribulation. Hire a car and do your own thing!
Cairns - Brisbane
Another great place with wonderful shopping. Make sure you visit late Steve Irwin's zoo...best cleanest zoo I've ever seen. Visit the Dolphin Resort on Moreton island and also see surfers. Car hire would be good here too.
Brisbane - Fiji
here was total paradise in which we chilled out drinking coctials!
Fiji- Sydney (transit)
Sydney - Bangkok (transit)
Bangkok- London
You could stop-over whereever you wish on route such as Singapore, Thailand or Dubai. You could even do a round the world trip and do Los Angesles or hawaii after Fiji?
Some good websites
travelmood
tripadvisor
hotel.com
travelbag
qantas holidays
Have fun planning your trip. We spent 5 days in Sydney, 2 in melbourne, 3 Ayers Rock, 5 Cairns, 5 Brisbane and 3 Fiji.

Where are you? You could be told lots of places, but you have not said what you are interested in or what you like. Perhaps you could give a bit more information and they could tell you exactly what you want to know
