When you broil meat your heat source is gonna be coming from the top. Some ovens, mostly gas ones, have a broiler pan underneath the main oven compartment. Others like most electric have an extra heating coil at the top of the main compartment. Broiling usually does not take as long as roasting. For me it's usually a way to cook stuff at high heat fast. As opposed to roasting is slow but usually is a lot more tender.

Broil is a way to grill meat in your oven. When the broil setting is turned on the temperature is at around 500 degrees.
When we broil steaks we have a special pan that has a grill rack on it that we place the meat on. We move the rack of the oven up one spot in the oven (before turning the oven on) and then place the pan with rack and meat to the oven. Close the door of the oven just a little bit (because if you close it you can't watch to make sure the meat doesn't burn) and then start to cook the meat. For a steak it takes about 15-30 minutes or thereabouts from start to finish. With a pork chop it will take a bit longer because of the temperature it is required to be on the inside to indicate doneness.

When you turn the broiler on in your stove, what you're doing is turning the top elements on only. You could broil chops that have already been "pre" cooked. Broiling is going to give them a very quick browning on each side, giving you'd flip them. It's like a finisher. A warmer. You'd broil cheesy mac to crisp and brown the top while warming the center. I don't broil anything, but use it to intensify the look of my meat, or to melt some cheese, or even to toast french bread covered with olive oil and garlic. Good luck cooking
