next time try...accurate, long range rifle. and if I had the money to burn and the need to knock down long range targets and the know-how to do it I'd get a Cheytac .408. better ballistics than a .50, helluva long range and knock-down power to spare. but if I were a guy interested in training to be an "accurate long distance shooter" I'd get something bolt actioned in the .308 caliber because you can pass between 5-8000 rounds through a barrel and it takes PRACTICE to be able to do that. also rounds are cheaper, easier to buy in bulk and to find in general. IF I didn't have the money for the cheytac but wanted plenting of knockdown power at long ranges then I'd use a remington 700, .300 win mag caliber, with a Mcmillan A5 stock, some trigger work and action truing. probably a match grade barrel as well that was custom fit to the weapon. but its a rare "sniper" that needs to shoot better than a 2 MOA or so and these weapons shoot .5 or better. so back to your question....more MILITARY snipers shoot the 7.62 (.308) than any other. there's also the .50 and the 6 and 8mm guys, but those are not as common.

Probably the 7.62x54R, that thing made some amazing shots on German troops during "The Great Patriotic War", also known as World War Two. It took down Germans at 1,200 meters on several occasions. Very powerful, straight shooting round even with cheap Soviet rifles and ammo. With a good rifle and modern ammo it would be spectacular.
And of course the .50 is there but it weights a lot... not good for a quick get away.
Like others have said, Sniping is an action, it isn't a gun, it isn't a specific bullet.... some guns and rounds are better to help a sniper but the shooter is the most important piece of the puzzle.

No such thing as a sniper caliber. Want to know a good caliber for long range shooting? speak with several current and/or ex military and/or law enforcement personnel who dealt with it. As for hunting, i have three i personally like(1. being the .308 2. being the 30-30 for heavy brush(that and not over 150 yards.). 3. being the 30-06.

since a snipe is a bird I would go with a 12 gauge
but seriously it is not the rifle or caliber that makes a sniper it is the person pulling trigger
that said I would go with a 308 Winchester
mild recoil, accurate, and I can't go much past a grand anyway

.308 Win/7.62 NATO.
The cartridge will do anything the .30-'06 or .300 WinMag will do in the long range accuracy line, will produce less recoil, will burn less powder doing it, and will not burn out the barrel as fast.
If I were building a dedicated long range rifle, I'd look for a Model 70 Winchester, install a match barrel (from MacMillan, Jarret, or Shilen), have the action pillar bedded, and the barrel free floated. I'd slap a Leupold scope on top, and have a Timney or Kanjar adjustable trigger installed and call it good.

Personally I'm a 6.5x55mm Swede fan. Accurate, High BC, low Recoil, available in match grade ammo. Most will say a .30 caliber like the .308 win or .300 win Mag. As most sniper rifles are in those chamberings.

I have to agree with the majority of the opinions posted thus far: .308 is the most common and probably the one most versatile. If money weren't an option, HK PSG-1 is the model I would choose.
The best "bargain" rifle would be the Remington 700, in 7mm. It's great for big game, and with a little tweaking, is more than accurate enough for the average shooter.

A sniper kills people. A Marksmen kills targets .If you are not a sniper employed by an armed force, please do not refer to anything you own as "sniper".I'm guessing what you mean is if you were a sniper, what caliber gun would you choose. I'm going to say .308 or 30.06.,preferably AP rounds.I would say 50.BMG,but that doesn't really fit the "traditional" sniper role
