You need to take into account several factors, as number of speakers and importance of internation trade.
And that's precisely what the Steinke Language Index meassures. Take a look:

language is a good subject to study. any language can be useful, depending on what you need it for. the most widely spoken languages are: Mandarin, English, Hindustani, Spanish, and Russian. (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0775272.html). English is the most important language to learn and is clearly on the rise as far as stats go, however; I see you speak English already so forget that.
Spanish is commonly spoken in the United States and is an interesting language to learn.
French is spoken, by precedence, at the Olypmic Games along with English as the only two languages used. French is also the most diverse language as it is spoken in over 40 different countries.
German is the most related to English. It may be a good choice for that reason.
Latin is useful for learning the basis of the romance languages, but other than that it is useless.
The United Nations has six official languages: English, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese (Mandarin).
Hindustani is also on the rise and may soon become the seventh official language of the UN.
Personally, I would recommend that you study the romance languages: Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian, etc. They are all unique languages, but have many similarities. Once you become fluent in one of them, it will be easy to learn the rest. Good Luck to you!

The most commonly used language in the world is Mandarin. Over one billion people speak Mandarin as their mother tongue.

The next most common languages are:

English 500 million
Hindustani 497 million
Spanish 390 million
Russian 280 million
Arabic 250 million
Bengali 210 million
Portugese 190 million
Malay-Indonesian 160 million

These are the most important languages in terms of total population, but the world has 191 countries and over 6800 languages! Many of these languages are limited to very small geographic areas or small ethnic populations, but they're all fully evolved, complex, culturally rich linguistic systems.

Important languages in business and for Internet service providers

The languages that are important in international business, as an Internet service provider, depend largely on the specific business you are in, the service you provide, and where you are focusing your marketing efforts. In general, we can say that the following languages are key for most international service providers:

English

German

Italian

Japanese

Spanish

What makes a language important to business? It's partly a matter of target population, and it's partly the affluence of each population and their willingness to do business outside their local communities or nations.

Important languages in science and technology

The languages that are important in the fields of science and technology are arguably the following:

English

German

Russian

Spanish

What makes a language important to science and technology? It's primarily the amount of science being done in a given linguistic group, and partly the accessibility of that language to the larger scientific and technical community (either through bilingualism or through machine-mediated translation).
