A burning cigarette is a health risk not only to the smoker but to everyone in the same room. The scientific evidence of tobacco hazards is strongest for smokers. However, research reveals that regular exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke also threatens the health of nonsmokers. 37,000 to 40,000 people die from heart and blood vessel disease caused by other people's smoke each year.

Dear Wa'likumussalaam warahmatullah Alcohal or intoxication is totally banned by every one. Smoking Marijauna brings the same affects as Alcohal, . Smoking Cigarettes is harmful to Human health which causes Cancer and it is forbidden in Islam to harm oneself. Smoking is nothing but a form of slow suicide. The Qur'an says: "And slay not the life which Allah hath forbidden..." Surah, Al-Isra, 17: 33 "And make not your own hands contribute to your destruction." Surah, Al-Baqara, 2: 195 "Nor kill or destroy yourselves for verily Allah hath been to you most Merciful." Surah, An-Nisa, 4: 29 This is from Holy Quran, which Muslims cannot deny. Even Governments from all over the world started realizing the ill effects of Smoking and they have banned smoking in work premises and public places. Even India has banned it last week. what I do not understand is while these Governments have banned Smoking in Public places after realising its ill effects, but still they do not ban manufacturing and selling cigarettes totally so as to earn the tax money out of it. That is too sad. Same thing with alcohal too, except in few Islamic countries. Hope it satisfied you. May Allah guide all of us and Ummah in particular towards straight path Aameen.

Tobacco, a New World plant, was unknown in the Eastern Hemisphere at the time when the Holy Qur'an was revealed. Modern scholars have issued fatawa (religious rulings) regarding prohibiting thethe use of tobacco, because it has been established to be harmful.

BTW, Ramadan will be here in a few days. Ramadan is an ideal time to quit, since smoking is prohibited while a person is fasting.

Things are a little bit confusing in Islam when it comes to subjects that were not known in Mohammad's time, some supreme Mullahs decide about new situations based on their interpretation of Quran and Sunnah (this process is called ijtihad). I know that Mullahs have not ruled against Tobacco (despite of Twizzle's claim), even I know that using almost all kind of norcatics is not banned by Mullahs (at least Shiet Mullahs).

please see the traslated text of Quran 5:90/91 below

90. O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper

91. Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain?

According to Webster Dictionary, The meaning of intoxicant is like this
To stupefy or excite by the action of a chemical substance..
To stimulate or excite,
To poison.
To cause stupefaction, stimulation, or excitement by or as if by use of a chemical substance:

Now sir according to above definition of intoxicant u decide urself that whether cigarette comes under this or not.

What my believe is that cigarette is also a intoxicant as it is made of a chemical substance which stupefy and excites too and also it is a poison which is harmful to the health of human

I don't believe that there is anything in Quran or Hadith regarding cigarettes specifically.

But many Muslim scholars have come to conclusion that it's makruh or undesirable because it does long-term negative damage to the human body, analogous to drinking.

While there are some other scholars who completely prohibit consumption of cigarrettes.

This is my view the word used in most English translations in 5:90 is not alcohol or drink but intoxicants. Cigarettes and drugs etc all intoxicate the body therefore I would that it is best to stay away from them, but I'm no scholar.

Smoking did not exist among the people in the time of Prophet Muhammad (salallahu aleyhi wa salaam), so in this case our Major scholars have had to make ijtihaad in this matter.

Most of our major scholars have ruled smoking haram, based on the very harmful effects of cigarette smoking to the user, and those around them, who would become second-hand smokers.

I don't know a verse to back up that your not allowed to smoke but there are verses that say you must not commit suicide. So smoking is like slowly committing suicide as it damages your lungs which can eventually lead to death. Sometimes you have to actually use your brain when reading the Quran.

slms..i couldnt recall anything that can relate the cigarettes to the times of our prophet(saw)..but i am comfirmed and know that cigarette is forbiddened due to the health aspect..

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an, Surah an-Nisaa verse 29:

O ye who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities: but let there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual good-will: nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah hath been to you Most Merciful.

as the cigarettes brings nothing but harm,it is forbidded..
