Or is it just something made up for a cartoon? The cartoon "Full metal Alchemist" is really in depth, I was just wondering if it was a a real belief, or if it was just made up for the show. (I know it sounds like a dumb quesiton, I'm just really into the show). Thanks.

Alchemy today is alive in the form of transformation using energy from all that is.
It is the art of changing the base elements of the being into the gold of enlightenment.
Much is held secret until the pupil is ready, then the way is shown.
There are process's relative to the art which include using the elements of self to release that which is unlove within the body.
The Emerald Tablet holds much knowledge.
Alchemy is pre chemistry
The Hermetic knowledge has existed since time immemorial, revealing itself to few.
Some historical alchemists are Nicholas Flamel, Basil Valentine, Nicholas Barnaud. to name a few.
Alchemy reveals much to the mature seeker of knowledge.
Arthur Edward Waite understood alchemy, and to read of his work is to understand something greater.
The Philosophers Stone is also part of alchemy.
There is much information to be learned from this wonderful subject.

It is real and ancient. Alchemy has been around in some form or another since the begining of time, now it is usally called Chemistry.

Alchemy was the precursor of modern chemistry before they the knowledge to go with it . They were on the right track but laden with ignorance .

Alchemy is real,I do not know if anyone does it these days.
Leonado DA Vinci was also a alchemist.

it was an ancient belief. It included belief in a substance that can turn baser metals into Gold and in something called "the elixir" which was supposed to grant immortality. It is no longer a common belief or practice.
By the way, modern scientists have transformed very small quantities of lead into Gold.
