Why do they do it? I have heard from so many women of men needing time and space to work out their problems, and they dont seem to understand that women need answers and communication.

You don't need to understand it, you just need to accept it for what it is. Women understand men as well as men understand women (though this can seem untrue since every person is biased to a point).
The truth is, I personally crave stability. When I've had a rough day and have been unable to keep that peace, I want to go home and check out. If I insist on doing something, it is very menial. This is how I recharge my batteries.

If I understand your question correctly, the reasons why we "go into our caves" is because we have to take time out before any arguments exculate to the point where more hard feelings can arise or worst case scenario physical abuse. It is best for everyone to cool off before you end up on an episode of Cops.

Yeah sometimes you just need some space. Time to cool off, relax, and just calm down.
