Good question!
Because it is psychological. Desperate times require desperate measures, they say...
The premise is this: I exist, but do not know where I came from and do not know where I am going....
The myth says - Either panic, or create a God.
but Atheism brings the responsibility of our "souls" to us only. Enlightened atheists see the whole God thing as a major life impediment and can't believe how they once lived under that chain.
So instead of stupid men facing a cold, big, frighteningly eternal universe with death as the thresh-hold, He creates God. Necessary, probably for several millenia, but FINALLY! NO MORE! As we are seeing that the universe is not so frightening after all - as we are seeing that what we KNOW is more important than what we believe.
As we look to the heavens and beyond with promise - promise that we are made of the same stuff and that we are here simply because we belong to all of it. The journey is the destination and curiosity is our salvation.
There's nothing more pathetic than a foxhole conversion.

Human Nature moves us to seek our parents for refuge when our life is in distress. The same thing happens with God. We all seek for that spiritual peace when we feel empty and lost. Most of the times when we are in trouble and feeling we have not way out. Some that do not find that spiritual answer, or do not believe in God, become highly suicidal.

There is a reason for this, but it's not at all that people find G-d because G-d is everywhere G-d motivates us to come to him and most of the times when one has been in the dessert of wanting to quench their thirst, when water does arrive they are traumatized by it in such a way that the last thing they want to do is to go back to the dessert they want to stay where there is abundance of food and water well.....this is what a bad occurence does to a person who forgets G-d he dipletes his soul of vital nutriants such as the living waters and the bread of life that are found in the tree of life.
And when he remembers how desperetly close he or she came to loosing his or her inheritense they were so overwhelmed with the fear from straying from the source that they only want to stay connected to it, so because of this traumatic occurence they came and no longer wanted to look elsewhere. The messiah said when a sheep wonders from the fold he would go and find it and when he'd find it he would then [break] his legs so that he would no longer stray from the fold.

It's when we are in a mess, that we realise that we can't do it by ourselves. As to the truth of our feelings, only the person in question and God really know if it is a sincere commitment.
Sometimes, I think God uses these really bad times to make us confront our need for Him in our lives. It is easy to forget our need when we have things going well again. But there are many people out there who truly do experience God in their lives and He becomes real to them.
In the Western world, we have so much that we tend to forget God in our busyness and our 'need' for the stuff in our lives. It is normal but we still need to remember God in the good times. Like you said, we should be celebrating God's goodness to us in all our circumstances - thank Him when things are going well and lean on Him when it gets tough.
Pray, pray, pray.

It is a way for God to get your attention and you may not be listening, like the joke about the man on the roof of his house while his neighboorhood was flooding, the water continued to rise. The man didn't take the help that was offered, the boat, the helicopter. Each time he said no, God will save me. Then the man drowned and died. The man asked God, why didn't you help me when I asked. God said, who sent the boat, who sent the helicopter?

You are right in saying 'so many people,' and not 'all people' because this isn't the case every time. However, people for whom life is going well don't think they need God. The misconception is that God is only there for us in times of trouble. Of course, it's not happiness we need, but forgiveness, and that is why we need God whatever we feel. To answer your question, think of a small child playing happily, on his own in his room. He knows his mother/father is nearby but he's quite content and does not need them at the present time. Now imagine he hurts himself, or a friend drops by and upsets him. Now he calls out to the one he knows will come with open arms to comfort him. God is our father, and he does the same.
I got to know God at a bad time in my life, too, although I wasn't aware I needed Him, he intervened with his love and captured my heart and healed my pain, he is ready to do the same for you. Simply call on him and he is waiting.

Most people turn to God in these dire situations, because that it what it takes for them to look somewhere else besides themselves for lifes answers. When they ask their friends, they are trusting their own judgement in choosing those friends as reliable sources. To turn to God means they must take their valuable securities and hidden secrets and bring them to the light.
Luke 8:17
For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

My life gets tough some times, but I don't turn to god. I just move on. So who would you be talking about? Murders, people in prison. That's just a show for them. That's how some of them get out sooner by using that as an excuse. In everyday normal life, no one turns to god.

In or out of trouble you have very little chance of finding someone you do not know by looking up to the sky or mumbling magic words. The kingdom of God is within us, not the sky. The unholy spirit will give you plenty of nonsense to chase after for those who don't really want the truth.

When people find themselves in situations that are out of their control or that they feel that they can not control it helps them to think that there is someone who is actually in control and that they can turn to this person. It is kind of hypocritical to only value God in times of needs but thankfully God in not judgmental and he will still be there for you no matter if you only speak to him in times of trouble or if you speak to him daily. And by the way I am one of those people who usually speak to God when things are going good. One more thing to remember Some of Gods greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.
