Well, the egyptians mummified their people. . same basic concept, just different style. Them, I think?

The tradition stems historically from an ancient tradition of watching over the deceased's body in the hope that life might return. Not all funerals have a viewing, Jewish people for example bury the deceased shortly after death without ever viewing the body they also do not allow emballming. Viewings now are more about saying a final goodbye and it is believed that a viewing helps the family face that their loved one is actually gone,. We had a viewing for my Grandfathers funeral. It gave us all a chance to see him one last time and talk to him, touch him etc,
