I'm 18. 2wks ago me and my friend made the mistake of going in a middle school via a construction door that was left open. we walked around for awhile and saw a computer laying out and not thinking decided to take it.

yesterday, 3 policeman came to my house and said they knew i had the computer so I immediately led them to it unplugged it for them and gave them all the packaging. They were friendly and told me I was very cooperative and seemed like a nice guy and that in a week i was going to have to stop by the police dept for fingerprinting etc and to post bail and i would eventually have to show up in court and get probation.

--BTW this is my first offense ever. So what I want to know is if anybody knows a ballpark of how much bail i will have to post, what the probation is like, and if this goes on my permanent record and if so is there any way i can get it removed. any stories of similar experiences and the outcomes would be great. really, anything helps. i am nervous as hell.

If they don't book you into jail, bail isn't a consideration, so don't worry about that. There will be fines and fees involved, but since this is your first offense, you'll very likely get some form of diversion or summary probation. Even if you get formal probation, the rules are nothing out of the ordinary for normal, law-abiding citizens. Do exactly what youre told to do, pay the fines and fees, and if you are placed on diversion the case will go away like it never happened. If Summary or Formal Probation, then you can request to have the matter "expunged" from your record once you've gone a certain amount of time after having successfully completed probation.

Just go in to court and be respectful. Own up to your mistakes but let your attorney do the talking. The man who represents himself has a fool for a client...

Most likely the probation will be pretty light since you are young, without prior offences and cooperative. I don't understand why you have to post bail when you are already free and have not tried to run so far, so I can't help you there.
This will be on your record permanently, but most people understand a youthful indiscretion. If you move elsewhere they may not even ever dig deeply enough to find it for things like jobs, etc.
Try not to be nervous-just go through with it,continue to be honest and make it clear how regretful you are, and be thankful for a cheap lesson.

Yup. Your 18, your not a juvenile anymore. So , yes , it will go on your permanent record. It not need ruin your life, you will get a fine and probation most likely since its your first offense ever. Fine/Bail, I can't really speculate but you will most likely get 6 months to a year probation, where you will have to check in weekly with your probation officer. They will have a list of things you can and can't do while on probation and you have to follow that, to the letter. Or you will go to jail. Be smart. Keep your nose clean, get a good job and try not to hang out with people that will cause you to make bad decisions! Good Luck!

You seem to be playing down the seriousness of your offense.

"not thinking decided to take it"

"I immediately led them to it unplugged it for them and gave them all the packaging."

"They were friendly and told me I was very cooperative and seemed like a nice guy "

"BTW this is my first offense ever"

Own up to your mistakes and do not make excuses for your error. It will go better for you that way.

Speak to your attorney about that. Make sure that you do have an attorney and see if he will accompany you when you go to the police station.

Your story is phony. The Police do not tell you to stop by, and post bail in a week after you have been caught with stolen property.
