The key is not to "do nothing". The key is not to act and leave nothing undone. Wu Wei is effortless action, action that flows from the Tao so naturally it is really non-action.
I understand it as a skilled musician. The musician makes no effort to play the music... amateurs "play music." The skilled musician BECOMES the music. It flows from his very being without thought or effort.

Seriously thinking about it, you can't do nothing. As even trying to do nothing, you are in fact doing something. So I can not give you an answer to something that in fact would be doing something and not nothing.
