I don't know. Maybe because people don't voice their opinions enough. If they talked about them more maybe they would mention they are good singer/songwriters. I myself think Sheryl crow is a wonderful writer. Her lyrics are somewhat simple, and they have a good meaning to them. I think when people start talking about someone, the media pays attention to what all the fuss is about. If people like Sheryl Crow and Kelly Clarkson, for any reason they should voice their opinion more, that way both singers could get the recognition they deserve. I guess what I'm trying to say is if people brought it up, maybe they would talk about it. Am I making any sense?

Kelly Clarkson isn't regarded as an influence just yet because she hasn't been around that long. And she isn't regarded as a good songwriter because she has yet to write a good song. She's known as a pop singer who is trying to stand on her own two feet. But it's difficult to do so when your biggest hits to date were all written by other people (or at least WITH other people).
Sheryl Crow is considered an influence and a great songwriter. She pens most of (if not all) her songs on her own and has been doing so for many, many years. Yes, she's put out a large number of pop hits. But that doesn't negate the fact that she's also written some fantastic songs.

I think it's because a lot of people see Sheryl Crow as being a fluff singer and Kelly Clarkson as being the first winner of "American Idol". A lot of people don't take those kinds of singer/songwriters seriously.

Kelly Clarkson is a hideous,no-talent ,lard-a$s.She is living proof how stupid the American public is about about true singing ability.Her nauseating moaning could only be construed as singing by mental patients and psycho ward inmates.

Crow is, though she is fairly 90s and her music has not aged much yet.
Clarkson is a clear talent, but how old is she now? Ask me again when she's 35.
