Statements like "love me and I'll leave you" or "don't fall in love with me - you will scare me off" imply that merely the expression of love implies a level of committment that is binding. Why should it be that we can not express love easily in a romantic relationship without giving the idea that we want our beloved to do more or be more in the relationship?

Good question. I think the people who say those things are afraid of love, either because they've never been in love or they were burned very badly and haven't gotten over it. It's best to just love them quietly because saying it aloud will probably just send them running.

Such expressions are generally used by men trying to have someone they can sleep with without having to make any committment or take any responsibility. Love expects more and it is nonsense to think anything else

That is where you have to set the boundaries. If you just say you love someone, they can not read what that means to you. It is up to you to make the implication clear.
