I have a question. I was reading about the Neapolitan Mastiff, and their temperment. That dog looks amazing!

What dogs look tough, powerful and confident, but are really nice and loyal in tempermant?

No need to mention Rotties or the APBT. To be honest, neither of them -look- very scary at all. I know they both make great pets if raised properly, too. =)

Neopolitan mastiffs are GREAT! if you love drool.... and itchy hair. They are one of my FAVORITE looking breeds but I would NEVER own one they are just tooo icky! They have lots of health problems that are expensive to treat too.... If you want to know more about the breed check out doginfo.com

EDIT: and poooh to everyone who keep suggesting boxers and danes... they WOULD look scary if everyone on the planet (ok that's an exaggeration anyone that knows dogs is more like it) didnt know that boxers are GOOBERS and danes are extremely calm and docile...

I think that would vary widely from person to person. Some feel the Malamuate (particularly the "closed face" type) some say chows with their scowling expression (as you can see from my pic I wouldn't consider one very scary lol). ANY large dog could deter anyone just due to it's size (unless of course the dog runs up and licks them to death). A mastiff has it all....big goofball personality with looks to kill (well, at least if you ran into one in a dark alley....personally they remind me of a big fuzzy pillow). Black dogs are usually considered "mean" dogs (which of course is a myth.....I have a big black female dog who is the biggest chicken you ever saw...but people are scared to death of her...pretty funny when she meets someone.....they run one direction, she runs the other......) Some consider a particular breed to be "mean" (as like the ones you mentioned above) and so whenever they see a dog of that breed even if it's the nicest dog in the universe they'll be afraid.

Even a snarling Chihuahua can look pretty scary to some people! :)

Looks can be deceiving.

Personally I've always thought of the Blue Mountain Dog as tough, powerful and confident. And Yet they have the kindest of traits.

American Staffordshire Terrier with the ears trimmed are kind of spooky, they look like a giant pittbull that way. Great Danes they are afraid of no dogs and few men, I've had them, and when they stare at you , you feel very vulnerable even though they wouldn't hurt you.

A dog that LOOKS scary might work better to keep out intruders than one who looks docile even though a docile dog is more prone to biting.

Boxers look pretty tough but they can be some of the sweetest and best dogs!
