Besides the obvious lack of belief in gods.
I ask because I had answered a question earlier regarding if it were likely that I would convert to Theism if I was on my death bed and received a lot of thumbs down for saying that I was unsure, but it could happen. It was quite evident that there was a lot of disapproval to my answer as I hit 6 thumbs down in a matter of minutes.
Needless to say, I started wondering if people were at some level holding an expectation that I failed to meet as an Atheist.
Thank you for participating.

auntb93,
The thing is.. at this time I lack belief in any gods at all. I do accept the possibility in the future that my views could change. I do not assume a militant view of Atheism. By the definition of Atheism I am Atheist, but by the definition of Agnostic I am also agnostic. I did leave a source of Atheistic-Agnostic though.

I don't expect anything different of than what I would expect of any other human being. I hold hopes that they may be a little more tolerant of others and less judgemental, but I don't really expect it.
Atheists are a diverse group, so you can't expect them to all act the same. Their beliefs vary widely too. Not all of them technically agree on how life originated. Some are 'spiritual' others are not.
The only 'requirement' of being an atheist is that a person holds no belief in the existance of god/s.
Don't worry about copping flack from other atheist...I get it all the time, because I frequently deviate from the stereotypical beliefs some expect an atheist to have.
However, I've made some good atheist friends here who are very tolerant and understanding of the fact that everyone's beliefs differ.
Peace!
Edit: Some atheists have become as dogmatic as the theist fundies they claim to despise and I find that very sad.

Well, for me, to each his own. That goes w/ any religion or lack thereof, unless you start publically trying to call out athiests or shoving religion down peoples throats. You shouldve gotten a thumbs up for at least being honest, but I guess the only expectation I have of other athiests is that they dont one day go "you know what, all this mumbo jumbo DOES make sense after all" Because i think born again people are worse than regular religion nuts, at least religion nuts were brainwashed from birht, the born agains just flat gave up when **** got heavy because they couldnt muddle through on their own w/o a crutch.
But thats just me.

I think the thumbs down was probably for the idea that you should not call yourself an atheist if there is ANY possibility of your conversion to theism. You should probably call yourself an agnostic instead. I would not give thumbs down for that, but then I don't "thumb" much anyway.

I only expect the Athiest disbelieved for the right reasons. One probably becomes Athiest from having an open mind and logically accepts facts and truths and discards fiction and lies.
People frequently tell me that I need religion but can't give me one good reason why.
Do your thing and don't worry about the thumbs down.

Yess! Atheists GANG together killing people, torture, savages.
Have you heard aguy name Pol Pot???
He's head of Atheism , asked around what he did, and what did the American had to do with them .
Have you heard Fretilin? They're gangs of Atheists did the same.
Have you heard a guy name DN Aidit?? He too made a gang and tortured savagely on his trial to take over power.
Atheists are very close to Communism, no doubt about it.
Not all atheists are communists but all communists are atheists.

Nope.. Each person is different the only thing that makes an Atheist an Atheist is the belief that there are no deities.. All else is on an individual basis..

No. Atheists come in all shapes and sizes, and from all sorts of cultural backgrounds.
And don't worry about the thumbs down. It's just that people disagreed with your answer. Don't take it personally.

In the main we are of a strong individualist bent, which is a good thing. I am a humanist as well as an atheist and pacifist and vegetarian and democratic socialist and male feminist and pro-gay heterosexual, etc., etc. The thing which links me with an atheist who is of a totally different stripe is that he or she and I do not believe gods exist.

OK, maybe that was a little too harsh. At least you're trying, and that is more than the vast majority. You're just being honest. The more you know, the more you will become convinced that theism and deism are just plain irrational.

im not one but when people consider them selfs one thing or another and seek out others often they fell thier group should have common beliefs and opnions and in relgious groups those who belive outside the groups common beliefs are often shuned or treated different,to me i disagree with yor belief but i respect your right to belive what ever you wish is there a god or not the fact is i cant prove to anyone that there is,no more than you can prove there isnt .people gave you thumbs down cause they didnt like your answer it went against thier beliefs,i will not put you down because you are unsure if you would convert its your right to belve in whatyou want and as long as what you belive in no way causes injury to others i wouls suppourt your right to belive it not my place to judge.but its up to us all to suppourt the rights of eachother
