Restrictor plates are just as much, if not more, for the safety of the fans as they are the drivers. They kind of don't want cars flipping into the grandstands. It's bad for business, ya know?

It is supposed to a "safer" version of racing, but how safe is it doing 197 mph in a 43 car pack? I'd say more cars have been flipped with restrictor plates than without. I'd rather be doing 220 down the straightaway than be doing 190 surrounded by 20 other drivers that can't get away from me There's a reason that driver's wives hate restrictor plate races. Everyone knows there will be a huge wreck, it's just a matter of when and how bad will it be?

I dont know about the finish being the same as the start. The way restrictor plate racing is though, if your starting 43, and at least got your car set up to draft well, a Top 10 or even 5 is very possible as long as you can avoid the Big One.
I think with the COT for Talladega in October, I have a feeling with the bigger car, your gonna see restrictor plate racing comparable to what was going on in late 2000 to 2001, and with how the trucks run at restrictor plate tracks.
And if you want boring restrictor plate racing, go back to the late 90's to right before the aero rule change for the races in 2000. That was just follow the leader, snooze until the checkers waved.

I would say about the only way to go to a place like Daytona or Talladega with out the restrictor plate would be if they put in a chicane or loop halfway down the back straight to slow them down.
When car manufactures reduced the size of the cars that is when they started to fly when gotten out of shape and cars aren't meant to fly.
I personally think the pit guys are as much hero's as the driver too but this is just the way it goes.
I would rather watch the edge of the seat or standing nail biting side by side raceing on the track than relax and ho humming around waiting for those 15 seconds on pit road though.

Yes, but It had to be done for safety reasons as well as to keep the racing close.
These car were becoming airplanes. Someone, I think Bobby Allison rolled his car along the frontstrech fence throwing parts into the stands. Killing and injuring several spectators. This is when Nascar went to the restrictor plate.
Years ago Bill Elliot had a flat tire and went down 2.5 laps at Talladaga. He went on to get both of his laps back and win the race without any cautions. ( no Lucky dog back then )
Well nascar doesn't want races like that. It's no fun watching one car run away with it. $$$
What put the real pressure on the pit crews was when Nascar decided to reduce the size of the fuel cell!
I don't like the restrictor plates either, but I think that because of the above reasons they are here to stay!

As extremely risky (greater so for the followers interior the stands then the Drivers) because it is to do precise now; I nonetheless might decide for to be sure that if the followers the place greater effective secure. interior the NASCAR 04 sport that they had a myth music that I pray sometime they build. It replaced into called Tiburon Mega Speedway. It replaced into 3 a million/2 miles around; considerable banking; no restrictor plate. motor vehicle have been given as much as 245mph. It replaced into stunning!!!! i replaced into very disenchanted that they did not proceed with this music interior the 05 and 06 video games. NASCAR desires to construct a Tiburon style music; it would be lots of the main stunning racing ever.

I hate watching 43 cars all bunched together. If they can make a car run 220 mph and stay on the track, let them do it. I agree with the late Dale Earnhardt when he said, "This ain't racing." I also think that it is safer to have cars running 220 and spread out than have 43 cars all bunched together running 190 mph.

No its some of the best racing out there. whats better than 43 cars on a 2.5 mile track in huge packs with only inches in between cars. One car pulls out of the pack and that could make him a hero or zero. Restrictor plate racing is about nerves, trust, smarts, and luck. lots of luck.

It's a little lame in that they can't DRIVE their way to a win but it usually makes very exciting finishes and it is safer than all those cars going 230 mph. Bobby Allison may agree on that.
It is very intense for the drivers I'm sure. Maybe more in car cameras would help the TV show.

I agree with everyone else who said, its all about safety .
Racing is about just speed ,its about a well built car, performance, talent, skill, consistency , beating your competition by mere seconds across the finish line to win the race.
Rusty Wallace tested a car at Talladega Superspeedway without a restrictor plate in 2004, reaching a top speed of 228 MPH in the backstretch and a one-lap average of 221 MPH. Wallace subsequently described the experience as "out of control".< Wikipedia.com under "restrictor plate"
Talladega is my favorite track. It always has been

Restrictor plates are really for the protection of the fans. At today's technology, these cars would be going 230 around Talladega and Daytona. If one of them got airborne in a crash and went into the stands, it'd be unthinkable. That's the reason for trying to slow them down. But I agree with you, it's dull watching them all in one big pack.
