I own a kitten that has just reached four months old. He happens to live with my girlfriend and her roommate (who I do not live with). Whenever I'm around, he's very rambunctious and playful like I would expect a kitten to be. He's all over the place, literally. However, once I leave, apparently he becomes much more subdued and not anywhere near as hyped up. I spent the most time with the kitten when we first got him and I do spend the most time playing with him, so perhaps he associates me as more of a playmate than the two people that he lives with? Does anybody else have any ideas about this? Thanks for the help!

He's probably excited to see his 'friend'. It's like a child. They get excited to see someone or do something out of the ordinary. Maybe it's also because you're a guy. Some animals act different towards males and females. We used to have a female cockatiel that loved my dad but hated my mom and me. Weird. Anyways, just keep playing with the kitten and get it some toys for when you are not there. :)

Obviously, the kitten enjoys having you around. He may be more subdued because you wore him out, but he also may just be "your cat." Cats and kitten frequently have a special person. The best placements for cats and kittens are with the people they choose - I know; I have had several choose me, including the Aby girl I have now. For the record, I was looking for a boy kitten, but got out-voted. She kept putting herself between me and her brothers. I am not complaining - she is mine and I am hers. That is her in the picture.

I think he knows that he is YOUR cat and that even though he lives with these other people he knows you are his human. I have found in my experience that some cats are one human types of cats. My cat who is 9 years old lives at my parents house and he definitely gets happier when I come to visit. He is very affectionate with me but will bite everyone else. So I think he just is happy to see his human and just tolerates the rest when you are gone.

I guess your cat is excited to see you and wants to play with you. It's possible he does associate you as a playmate. He obviously loves you.
