My husband and I were having a debate on this tonight...
I know that all cities are different and what not, but what is the norm?

there really is no norm. and a lot of artists actually just pay a percentage of each tattoo to the shop, usually between 30 and 50%. but i'm sure rent can range from $300 to $3,000 a month depending on the talent of the artist the city and the shop traffic. before my artist moved to another city he paid about $750 a month, but his rent was raised to $1,200 a month and he quit working at that shop. we live in a metropolitan area of about 200,000 people and our city is the 99th largest in the united states. maybe that will give you some idea.

Impossible to answer. I agree with Somebody. Most artists pay the studio owner a percentage - most always 50%. It is the best for them in that if they are tied to a monthly, it might not be economical during the slow season. For me, I think I make more money as a studio owner by the percentage method in the long run.

Studio owners pay rent by location, size, and many own their own buildings.
