Something that won't hurt her if she licks it?

2007-09-06 17:59:27 · 7 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pets Dogs

She has a rash in her genital area because she is a very hairy dog naturally and has a lot of hair around her private area. We usually take her to the groomer to have her hair cut very short around that area but this last time it grew out long again before we could get to it. What happens is, when the hair is long there, she urinates and the urine sticks to her hair and clumps up. Then she licks it like mad to try and clean herself and she licks for so long that she gets a rash. I do plan on taking her to the vet tomorrow but I just wanted something to put on her tonight so she doesn't suffer because I know the poor thing is miserable because she's so itchy.

Just wash it with warm water and out some Vaseline on it.It won't hurt her if she licks it.You should ask your vet to shave the area when you take her.I have a dog with the same problem, and my vet advised me to keep her shaved, because flies are drawn to the area;they can lay eggs, which will turn into maggots and can kill the dog before you even realize they are there! To keep it clean, even after shaving, just use baby wipes on her, daily! Oh,and a good ointment to get from your vet for the rash is "Panalog." It's made for ear infections, but is also great for rashes and hotspots, and it kills yeast, too.

Depends what is causing the rash (bacteria, allergies, etc.) Might be good to check with vet and have his professional expertise in diagnosing what is causing the rash.

Aloe Vera: Used to treat burns, including sunburns, hot spots, and acne.

Tea/Tannic acid: Used to speed heeling and sooth hot spots. A strong black or green tea works best. Once it is brewed and cooled down, apply it to the infected area.

Vitamin E, also works well on hot spots. Apply vitamin E gel directly to the irritated area a few times a week.

Witch Hazel: Used to treat burns, especially sunburn. Soak a cotton ball or bit of gauze in this cooling liquid and apply it to the damaged area several times a day.

some options:
1) put in a bath with dawn dishwashing soap, yes dawn, then rinse. This is per my vet when my dog used to have skin probs.
2) use corn starch on her dry
3) put in a bath with baking soda in the water
4) put in the bathtub and pour some peroxide on her then gently rinse off
- she will lick off anything you put on her so dont use any ointments or meds like neosporin or hydro cortison. if you have a cone to put around her head thats better.

Good Luck!
