What you are seeing in the US is exactly what happened in Mexico 13 years ago when NAFTA was approved.
NAFTA, as its name states, is a free-trade agreement. Nevertheless, not all industries were included in the package. This means that there are certain goods that can be exported and imported without paying import taxes, and there are others who still are limited.
For instance, one of the big issues in Mexico was sugar. When Mexico allowed American sugar to enter tax-free in the country, it was a big riot in the country. Another example is with avocados (yes, the fruit). USA was not allowing Mexican companies to export to US avocados because it would affect American companies.
Talking about trucks, when NAFTA began, Mexico allowed American trucks to enter the country. But USA did not allowed Mexican trucks to enter US. Their justification was that Mexican roads were terrible and that forced American trucks to incur in huge maintenance costs, so it was not fair that American trucks had to survive the Mexican highways while Mexican trucks would enjoy of the nearly-perfect American highways. They said that until Mexico developed good highways in the country, they would let Mexican trucks to enter the country.
The truth was that was a clever way of USA of stalling Mexican trucks to enter USA and hence preventing American trucks compete against Mexican trucks in their own turf. But now that the due date has been met, American trucks are facing the fact that now they will have to compete against Mexican trucks inside USA. They will immediately loose a huge part of the business because now there will be no need for goods change trucks at the borders, and the same Mexican truck can continue its way into America... just like American trucks do when they come to Mexico.
Those are the rules of the game of NAFTA. Some lose, other win. Leave it to the congresses to hope they are making the right decisions.

I agree with lasuremartin.
Also there is another reason, a lot of the mexican drivers are carrying chemicals and other hazardous materials, you know the stuff that explodes and the toxic fumes get into the fat of living things, then in twenty years that living thing dies of cancer; The mexican drivers don't have Hazmat on thier CDL's and almost none of the trucks or trailers are desighned to carry hazardous materials. And now because of Bush we can't shut them down at the border. Hopefully the screaming metal toxic death traps will get cote by the DOT before they get very far. But that in it self leads to another problem, What is the DOT going to do with all the trucks, and their loads that they shut down? They only have so much inpound space. Then when the drivers abandon the loads and go back to Mexico or decide to become an "American", the DOT is stuck with the load and the truck. You can bet that the Mexican companies are not going to come up to where ever the truck is and pay to have it repaired to the DOT's regulations so that they can get a POS truck out of the inpound yard, I will not ever say anything about the fee the DOT charges to have had to held that truck and its load for how ever many days it took said company to come and get it.
Its very simple, the companys don't care what happends to that load or its driver. If the driver crash's into a family of five, killing them all. When he/she get's released and given a court date, he/she then skips the border back to Mexico never to be heard of again. Then when the family of the victims trys to sue the trucking company, they either find that the company no longer exists, or the company has no record of the driver and claims that the truck was stolen or that a law in Mexico pervents the family from sueing them because the family is not a Mexicon resident.
Yeah I can't see why people are mad about this.
Thank you Dr.

1. There is no guarantee that the drivers are well trained and the trucks are safe.
2. Not every truck will be inspected so they could sneak in anything from illegals or terrorists.
3. It will take jobs from American truckers.
4. Cargo ships would start shipping to Mexican ports rather than American ports. This will elliminate many jobs and have negative effects on the economies of US port cities.

They are broken down pieces of crap that would never pass any American standards of transportation safety. They will be moving illegal or at best sub-standard substances into our country driven by drivers who if not illegal could not pass our CDL tests, are likely using drugs and hauling more illegals into the country. They will be moving things that should be hauled by Americans with American trucks thus taking more jobs that Americans are not only willing to do but NEED to do to support themselves. Boycott anything that arrives in a non American truck! Refuse it, send it back and insist on using American labor and equipment when shipping. And don't forget to VOTE in the next election!

I make a pretty good living out here. Now MY JOB is being turned into another "job American's don't want to do" to quote our President. That's reason enough for me.
Yes we have the same deal with Canada. Canadian drivers can take their loads to their final destination, and Us USA drivers can take our loads into Canada. That's wonderful when we are talking about Canada. Their roads are on par with ours, their drivers are trained, subject to similar regulations, and make similar wages. I can drive in Canada without fear that a corrupt police officer isn't going to yank my *** out of my truck and lock me up for 75 years because I didn't answer his question properly. I don't have to drive 25 mph over rutted dirt roads for 700 miles wondering if their is an ambush waiting for me around the next curve.
Can someone lease explain to me why this is such a great deal??

I've answered before and i'll do it again, lots of people complains not everyone ( almost anyone id say) know why ...
Isn't crazy, it had to be done, it's a part of an agreement wich the US, Mexico and Canada singed, NAFTA, so ...
http://www.nafta-sec-alena.org/defaultsi...
basically says that :
Mexico says that the US have violated the NAFTA agreement since they haven't (hadn't) started the reduction of the restrictions in the US frontier transport services, and in Mexican investments on the US terrestrial transport industry .
ARTicles 1202,1203 frontier services, and 1102,1103 investments....
________________
why on earth would Mexico want to get bombs inside the us?, don't you see it it's all part of a big bussines between transport companies in both countries, Mexico can have poor people but also very rich industries, and lots of materials, actually the agreement NAFTA doesn't benifits either mexican or american citizens just big transnational companies.

There have been concerns about the condition of the trucks themselves. Many trucks have not been well-maintained and are literally falling apart. There are questions about how well-trained the drivers are and if they are even qualified to drive trucks that size. Also, do the drivers know what laws there are for driving trucks in the US? Another concern is that the trucks could be used for smuggling contraband or illegal aliens.

I can't speak for "some people," but my problem is not with Mexicans themselves. It is with ANYone who comes into this country, having illegally bypassed any or all of the necessary paperwork to either work here, or become a full citizen.
(Now, that happens to be largely Mexicans at this point, so I at least understand why people are becoming hostile towards Mexicans in general, even if their behavior is based on a [significantly real] stereotype.)
But when you say Mexican trucks, do you mean trucks made in Mexico, or trucks full of Mexicans? I think either one is symptomatic of an ineffective border and a government that doesn't REALLY want to do anything about the problem but signs a few bills because the American people are angry. (Don't expect it to be any better under a Democrat president, either; both parties may have different motives, but the results are the same: A tidal wave of non-Americans moving in and taking our jobs and our money and sending it back to their home countries.)
UPDATE:
Aha, I now know fully what you're talking about. Here's an e-mail from my sister, whose husband is a trucker. And I agree with her.
***
Right now, our Federal administration and the Department of Transportation are trying to push through a Mexican Trucking Pilot Program. This program is set to be pushed through despite not having many safety issues that are currently being left unaddressed, though the DOT claims to have addressed them.
This program would allow Mexican big rigs onto our highways more freely than they are already permitted, thus allowing very poorly maintained trucks to operate on our freeways, threatening our safety. The stories you see on the news about the lack of safety in American trucks would pale in comparison to stories about Mexican trucks. Do you (or your kids and grandkids) really want to be driving next to these guys - or worse yet, in front of them on a steep downgrade?
This program also opens an additional free and easy door for terrorists to come and go as they please from this country, as they will immigrate to Mexico, get licenses and then come here.
The last but not least concern involved in this program is the economy. Because Mexican trucks are often not well maintained, they have little maintenance expense. Therefore, they can haul loads cheaply and undercut American truckers. We spend thousands each year to maintain our truck - it adds up fast!
If any of these issues concern you, I urge you to call your Senator in Washington DC and ask him to do all he can to stop the Mexican Trucking Pilot Program when the FY2008 Transportation Approportions bill is presented on the Senate floor next week.
You can reach your Senator using the Capital Switchboard at 202-224-3121.

The middle-class is dying, this is just one more nail in the coffin. Outsourcing and NAFTA are killing us.
Not only does this take jobs from Americans, it diminishes the value of our truckers services. The rich get richer, the middle class becomes poor... and America loses more as the rest of the money goes to Mexico.
When it comes down to it, Mexicans are willing to work for less. They can undercut me, they can undercut my family and friends, they can undercut you, and your family and friends...
Where do we draw the line? How much should the USA suffer so that Mexico and greedy CEO's can benefit?
