so i have two questions...
1. he does this weird meowing thing....and walks around the house and he does it when he plays with the other cat. he's not hungry, thirsty, hurt etc... i'm just trying to figure out why he does this sound and what he is communicating.

2. he's about 5 years old and one of his ankles crack when he walks. he's not limping. he doesn't act like he's in pain whatsover. is there anything i can do to help his joints?

and please don't say that he's meowing b/c his ankle cracks . i know that, that is not that type of meow.

thanks

My male cat makes noises and weird meows when he is calling another cat to play with him. The only other time he meows is to get my attention or to get outside

the ankle thing sounds like an old injury to me. If it is obviously not hurting him, I would say wait until your regular visit and have your vet check it out then. You should eventually have it checked, though, because it could later lead to arthritis.

I can't tell you anything about his ankle: check with the vet on your next visit. But as for the meowing, they all do that sometimes. I always say that they're talking to Planet Cat. If he's doing it some night, go up to him and touch him gently. He'll sort of wake up, as if coming out of a trance, which is essentially what he's doing. I don't know if anyone knows anything about the reasons behind this sort of behavior: it's what cats do. They also run around the house chasing invisible air molecules, too.

It's what's fun about having a cat: they lead their own lives, and don't always tell you what's going on with themselves.

1.) He might be meowing because he smells a female in heat...or if your other cat is a female and not spayed then she might be in heat..But my cat Charlie does this loud/low meowing noise as well when he plays with his toy mice..and its usually when its in his mouth...

I think that he does this because he wants my attention or the other cats attentions and wants them to play...

2.) He probably does have joint damage and the best advice I can give is to call your local vet, explain the situation, and ask them what they would do.

cracking joints. happens. doesn't mean its painful, just makes noise.

Meowing. Well, i have to admit, all my cats "talk" to me, when i come home, lots to my kids because the girls are constantly talking to them, and wait for an answer.

they make noises at each other too, and i have no idea what they say, except it either ends in wrestling match, or icy stare : ) Makes me wonder what they actually said!

He is probably bored.
Cats can get arthritis just as we do-have the vet evaluate it on your next visit.
