Mine and my neighbours cat do it! They bend their paws under them when they sleep or just rest. They also get into interesting positions when asleep (ie rolled over onto their back) which reminds me of a twister game.
While the paws looks uncomfy, both cats I have seen do it seem to think it is comfortable. It's probably the equivalent of crossing our legs on a chair...It's soooo cuuute though!

If you have a glass tabletop it's really interesting to see how they bend their wrists when they do this. The 'meatloaf' position has the cat tucking his paws under him so that the pads are facing up to his chest, so when he first lifts up to get up, he's pressing on the back of his wrists. It's weird all right. But it keeps his paws warm, which is why I think they do it that way.

Yes and I think it's adorable. Don't you wonder why their paws don't fall asleep like our hands do if we sleep on them? They must not have nearly as many nerves in their paws as we do in our hands.
I caught this pic of two of the kitties I had when we first moved to WA. It was rather chilly and they were snuggled up - paws all neatly tucked it to stay warm - http://www.ferretocious.com/cats/coldkitties1.jpg

My cat sleeps flat on her stomach with her front paws tucked under & her back ones sticking out.
She also lays very casually with her paws crossed.
This is her at this very moment! [just took the pic]

Mine now don't do this but many cats do They like small places and tucking the paws under is a cozy action, it appears.

Cats are a lot more agile and flexible than us. I can't imagine being able to do some of the things our cats manange. When we got are kitten Spartan, he used to sleep all twisted up and would even stand with his paws at slightly odd angles.. Now he's a bit older he does it less frequently.

Yep. My old cat does this before she sleeps. She tucks in her paws to keep cozy during cold season.

Yes, its a cat thing. It can freak you out sometimes. Does your cat lay on its back and have all four paws in the air?

Haha yes my kitties do this as well..
It's just their way of getting comfortable..Like how when we lay down, nap, or sleep..We lay on our stomach with our arms and hands underneath us...or put an arm underneath a pillow...etc..
My kitty Miss Kitty especially does this! - > http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6fepr8k
