I have a lot of preexisting muscle from training as a national lvl gymnast. I quit about three years ago but I still have the muscle, will this help me shed lbs faster than people who weren’t athletes? My coach always told me it would and I’m curious now!

yes - more muscle = faster metabolism
you can do cardio which is the only fat burning exercise 4-6 times week for 45-60min, it will burn fat and muscle so do light weight training a few times a week
and since diet is the key to fat loss you have to make healthy food choices and eat 5-6 small meals a day which will give your body energy when it needs it, 5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day, at least 8 glasses of water and plenty of protein, complex carbs and healthy fats. cut out all junk food, sodas, fried foods and foods that are made out of white flower and sweets.

I've heard that it doesn't actually make that big of a difference. It does take more calories to maintain muscle. But considering that a pound of fat is around 3500 calories, I don't think you're going to notice a GREAT deal of extra loss, from the muscle. But that's just what I read, so I could be wrong.

Yes your coach is right. Muscle burns calories, the more muscle you have, the more calories they burn.
You quit three years ago, you probably don't have the muscle that you think you have. You need to hit the gym, muscle doesn't stick around. If you are trying to lose weight, muscle will go much more easily than fat.

I don't agree with your coach. Muscle mass is much heavier than fat. However the way you look if you were to keep yourself moderately fit, you would look lighter and feel better.
