It is a really great dog food, so much better than some of the garbage at grocery stores and walmart. Look at the ingredients. There are no by products, no corn- they even have a new line of foods, Core, that have a single protein, a single carb, and no wheat, grains, soy, etc. It is great for dogs with allergies because there isn't a huge mix of random ingredients, also for dogs that develop allergies because you know the main ingredients and can switch to different Core flavor ie different protein, different carb.

I think a lot of people are worried because of all the recalls that have happened lately. I would definitely stay away from foods that purchase ingredients or make their foods overseas as that is where the tainted ingredients are coming from. I think Wellness has had only a couple recalls which is pretty good to some of the other brands. Merrick is another great brand, made in Texas and has had no recalls.

Overall I would say Wellness is an excellent food. If the recalls are the 'bad things' just keep an eye on the news. There are still some foods being recalled since the FDA is checking everyone out now but I would say Wellness is a safe bet. Just don't believe all those Science Diet and Purina ads that make their foods sound godlike. It is junk (with an exception to the SD Rx foods).

Wellness Dog Food is ranked a "Top Dry Dog Food" by the Whole Dog Journal. Wellness dog food represents a new generation of uniquely formulated, all-natural pet food which rivals human food in quality, nutrition and the cooking process. The primary protein source in the Wellness dog food line is human grade deboned chicken, human grade Atlantic whitefish or hormone-free lamb, depending on the formula. In addition, these top-of-the-line dog foods contain fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy grains, and vitamins and minerals. Another major differentiator is that unlike most commercial dog food manufacturers that rapidly extrude their food, Old Mother Hubbard slowly oven bakes its Wellness Super5Mix dog foods and treats to preserve and enrich the nutrients, and to enhance the aroma.

Wellness dog food does not contain any rendered animal fats, meat by-products, wheat, corn or white rice and also does not contain any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives of any kind.

Choose From Six Wellness Dog Food Super5Mix Formulas: Order the 30 lb size on this page or follow these links to order the Wellness - 15 lb or Wellness - 6 lb bag sizes, or the Wellness canned food and Wellness by the case.

Wellness is an excellent food. One of the best you can get. Its made with human grade ingredients and is a premium food. Sounds to me that your friends are NOT educated with dog food nutrition. I feed all my dogs Wellness. One of my dogs has a food allergy and Wellness is the only food that is helping her with her condition.

How to grade your dog's food:

Start with a grade of 100:
1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer’s rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

Wellness is a great food. If you are hearing bad things, I am not sure what they would be because there is nothing bad about it.

It's one of the best, your friends are probably to stupid to realize that it's about quality not quantity.... It's got one of the highest ratings on http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/index.php/cat/1

its on the last page of 5 star foods... they're alphabetical, but anything 3 star and higher is a quality food. If you can afford it BY ALL MEANS FEED IT!

Check out their label and just be sure that it does NOT contain wheat gluten. And that it isn't made in China. I would never give my dogs food or treats from another country.
