Yeah, me too.
My wife used to go to a lot of Estate sales with her aunt and one day dragged me along. I came home with a rifle case and a few ammo cans for under $10. I now go willingly and while I sure don't find everything I want, I have scored some great deals. Not free, but usually cheap.
Also, pawn shops are a good source of firearms, optics, bows, rods and tackle boxes and other gear. Always offer significantly less than it's marked. For example, I got a 1920s era Stevens shotgun in very good condition that was marked $145 for $50. It had been there quite a while and while the man scoffed at my offer I gave him my card and was leaving when he had a change of heart.

I hate to answer a question with a question, but why would anyone be giving away free hunting and fishing equipment?
You still have to buy a license and those are never free.

Free? Check the Death notices. There is always some guy with stuff in the basement that has passed away & a widow does not need. Craigslist.org is a good place as well.
