Microsoft Office Excel 2007. The program has been revamped in the 2007 edition to allow more data and more options, which makes any file created with the 2007 incompatible with earlier versions, by default.
If you know the person who created the file, you can ask him/her to save another version of the file which is compatible with earlier versions of Microsoft Excel. These files will end with the .xls extension.
Also, you can visit filext.com to answer this type of question automatically by simply typing the file extension in their search box.

Microsoft offers a compatibility pack for earlier versions of office to be able to use the new format. Free download from MS.
