I'm still thinking about it, but...

I might argue that society is held together primarily by Citizens or Patriots: individuals who are willing to subjugate their own egos and self-interest to the good of the community, society or nation. The problem is that the collective society then takes on an egoistic behavior that is magnified to the nth degree. While an individual's ego can be held in check by social forces, there are very few checks to the "national ego" other than the economic and military power of other national egos.

Spiritual people on the other hand are people who seek to lose or unite their ego into the Divine. So they tend not to have the Patriot's unquestioned allegiance to a national ego. They probably perceive the injustices of the society more clearly, precisely because they have a natural detachment from society.

So I would say Spiritual People don't hold society together. But they are a vital factor in improving society.

Peace to you.

Too often it is only the enforced laws which hold society together and not very well.

In general, I think it would be common sense, live and let live. I don't need or want aggravation so I won't give you any. Life would be ever so much more simple and enjoyable if more people had that attitude.

As I see it, too often it is the spiritual-minded people who tear society apart. Too much do as I say, not as I do.

God never wrote any laws. According to some beliefs, he dictated the Ten Commandments to Moses (we know what happened to those). These were not laws, they were religious commandments.

Hammurabi, the 6th king of Babylon, is attributed with the first written laws known as the Hammurabi Code. These Codes may have influenced the law-givers in England when they wrote the Magna Carta. Both may have greatly effected the written laws we live by today, not God. Separation of church and state, God knew not to meddle.

We have all kinds of people in the world. And none is better than the other. The spiritual science is such a wonderful science, that only following that is important, and not necessarily the status that one achieves in practicing spiritualism.

The moment one becomes conscious of his spiritual self, he starts walking on the path of bliss.

It does help the society, but there are atheists also and their social (read spiritual) circle is different.

I think the strong hold society together. Those who have great conviction and stand for a great vision than themselves and their own self needs and wants.

Even in family someone has to have strength and vision for the kids or family to stay together and live well. Great societies have great leaders. Even the bible says so. History says so.

Countries that suffer a lot of economic hardship and chaos have had bad, evil, wicked leader who do not care about their people.

The only thing barely holding society together is the Holy Spirit. Soon that will be removed from the world and nothing but force will hold society together.

Like it or not many of our laws are based upon the teaching of God which were given to man from the dawn of the age by God as his conscience. Yes the written law came later but that does not mean it was man made, God gave us conscience he gave us the ability to make law and moral choices.

Truly spiritual people DO hold the society together but unfortunately THROUGHOUT history there have been evil men and women doing evil things in God's name. This is not God's fault, it is mans!

It is also worth noting that just as many non spiritual people contribute to society....but guided by their conscience.

I wouldn't go quite that far. There are many spiritual hypocrites. I think it would be a better bet to say that those who follow the law holds our society. As less and less people do so, the world becomes less and less friendly.
may peace be with you

There are two kinds of attitude:
1) Life has no meaning, and nothing has consequence because when we die we are gone and are no more.
2) Life has meaning, and there is more than just death awaiting us. One cannot be sure of what, but being selfish and fearing death will lead to death.

Which of these two types of attitude will motivate people to be bothered to act selflessly for the benefit of society?
