Yep landmarks such as light poles--the caution lights in the turns--a sponsor sign on the wall--ect--ect before they get into a turn so they can lift and or pump the brakes. I use this method also on 3/8 and 1/2 mile dirt tracks I race on. And Yes you Can see the distinguishing marks.

They pick out a part of the track, where a fence starts, a logo on the wall, or another distinct object or marking and that is where a driver will turn, let off of the gas pedal, down shift, accelerate and/or, brake. If you watch the Olympics on TV downhill skiers do it as well. They are going far too fast to react to a corner on instinct they have a preset course that they travel around the track and the marks are sort of like signs that say turn here, slow down, brake!

The marks in question are not just in the turns but also include the slowdown area for pit road, points on the track for braking and passing.
The spotter reminds the driver of the accelleration points on restarts, and the timing points for variuos cars (leader is 2 seconds ahead at a specific point).
these are some of the things that are classified marks.

When a driver races on a course, they don't stay on the same lane while driving on the entire track. On a short track for example with a single grove, you want to be close to the outside wall when your in the stretches, and close to the inside wall on the curves. When you go into the curves, your going to have to break, then go back to the gas exiting the corner. A drivers marks are where they break and gas, and sometimes specific spots in the stretches. If you hit your marks consistently, then you have consistent lap times.

the important marks are where the driver turns in for the corner, where he hits the middle of the corner or apex, and where he exits or track out. hitting those 3 exactly every time are crucial to a good lap.
