I am recovering from chemo and my hair is growing very slowly and is very curly on top. It used to be straight. Any suggestions? What have you heard are preventive foods or supplements tp prevent cancer from reoccuring? If you have had breast cancer do you get regular MRI, bone scans and how often? Any one out there that had a 3a with lymph node invovlement? How are you doing?

My mom had breast cancer, she is now 4 year cancer free!! Her hair did the same thing her hair was straight fell out and came back curly. She hasn't had any luck with anything. Shes just made it work for her. She is currently on a medication called Aromasin its a cancer preventive, shes had very good luck with it. She does have a MRI every year. She had all 12 lymph nodes removed and all was neg. but the mass was so big they wanted to make sure. Anyways I'm sure all this really didn't answer your questions! But good luck with everything Much luck! :)

Hair can absolutely change in color and or texture when it regrows after chemo... I can also say thay while it starts regrowing very slowly for a few months, it often has a sudden spurt of rapid growth after that ( for some, not all ) So that is normal for that situation... I will email in a day or two to chat about the rest... But once you get reconstruction ( if you choose to ) MRI's should be done at least yearly...
You might want to look into Flaxseed oil ( there is some positive and negative stuff about it in relation to breast cancer so do your own research ) But be sure and take calcium with a vitamin d supplement as your bones have taken a beating with all of the treatment....

I'm going through chemo right now but I've had a 2 week break and during that time my hair has started to grow back. I'm African American and it's coming in straight and I swear it's coming in blond! Well, I've heard they have more fun so I guess I'll get to see ;-).

I hear of things you are not suppose to do or eat or whatever and I just can keep track of everything so the only thing I've cut out of life is anti persperant and drinking bottled water that's been sitting in the car.

I also had all my modes removed with 3rd stage A cancer. At first it was hard because I had limited movement but now it's like nothing was ever done although sometimes my pits get a bit sore.

Can't help you with the curly hair, I'm afraid it will be that way. I really don't know why. I just know that for some reason if you hair was straight before is comes back curly. As far as food goes, stay away from sugar, and sat. fats. They are very bad for you. The things you can eat that will help, broccoli, cauliflower, legumes. I take CoQ10, vitamin E 800iu, selenium, inositaol 220mg 2 capsules twice daily. I firmly believe in these supplements. I have a mammo every year along with a chest x-ray and blood work. I am a 14 year survivor and I am doing great. My faith in God has seen be through this whole ordeal. Without him I wouldn't have made it.

I can't answer all of your questions, but I know that chemo can somehow mutate the way your hair grows back, and sometimes even the color. I had a dear friend go through chemo a number of times and each time her hair grew back it was a different color and texture. "Preventative" foods that are said to help lower the risk of cancer generally have what are called antioxidants. So, think citrus, even grapes, and tomatoes (cooked tomatoes even more so)...green tea is also a great source of antioxidants.

Chemo does change the texture and even the color of people's hair. The only suggestion is to see this as the opportunity to experience a different kind of hair. :-\
Below is an on-line journal article addressing nutrition and other "alternative treatments" for cancer prevention. Good luck to you. I pray your outcome will be very good, even though it means getting used to a different kind of hair. :-)

My mom had the cancer you described. She recovered and lived to eighty when she broke her shoulder and died of complications. But she beat the cancer. When she lost her hair to chemo. I shaved my head to support her. We had both had straight hair all our lives. But when it grew back on both of us it grew back curly. I think it also has to do with starting again so short and having less weight to hide the curliness, and age adding to the curl. Don't eat fatty foods, or dairy. I've seen some awesome success with macrobiotic diets. Organic veggies and lots of them. Best of luck. Think WELL!

The longer the hair grows, the more likely it is to go straight again.

It comes out short and curly at first because of the curvature of the follicles.

Give it time.

Take care.

My aunts hair grew back curly too but super soft like babies hair. My uncle is actually growing back a little more hair then he had before chemo.

Mine came back curly, my sister who had curly hair beforehand had hers come back straight!

In both cases it took 2-3 years to return to our "pre-treatment" type of hair.

We both had different types of cancer in our breast. But our follow ups have followed the same general pattern.

Oncologist visits every 3 months, gradually tapering (over years) to annual visits.

Blood tests before each visit, annual mammograms, scans every 2 years..........
