In the Old Testament days, when the Jewish Law was in effect. In order for a person to truly worship God, they had to make sacrifices, goats, sheep, lambs, fowl, bullocks, etc. In this manner the blood of the animal or fowl was poured over the alter and this was considered a sacrifice for ones sins. The animal sacrificed had to be perfect, without blemish, or it was not a worthy sacrifice.
In the same tradition, when God gave His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross, he provided the only perfect sacrifice that was worthy. This sacrifice , this perfect Lamb of God, was payment for all the sin of mankind, present. past and future.
This is why He had to die. But praise God, the story doesn't end there, He now sits at the right hand of the Father and awaits our coming.
