What I do is breath in for two strides, and breath out for two strides. It helps you keep breathing and keep pacing, both beneficial. Keep running, and it will "hurt" a lot less soon.

You are running too hard. Slow down. You should be able to carry on a conversation while running so set your speed to allow that
Or run intervals: when your breath shortens, slow down to a jog or walk until breathing is normal, then speed up again until breath shortens, then slow down and so on.

Slow down just a bit. You're probably pushing too hard and need to pace yourself a bit more.
Also, focus on your breathing; if your breathing is becoming ragged, you may be concentrating too much on your feet or legs.
It will also help to focus on your breathing when you're NOT running laps -- pay attention to how you breathe when you're at rest, or doing minor activities. That will train your body to be more aware of itself and provide you greater control when you are doing something as energetic as running.

You need to condition your respiratory system. It includes your lungs, your air ways, as well as your breathing muscles.
Take breathing exercise 30 minutes every day by breath in via the nose, slowly and very deeply, then breath our via the mouth. At the same time , you stretch your both arms open when breathing in.

As with everything, you'll get better with practice. You may need to ease up on your pace a little until you get in better shape.
