My microsoft word (from office XP)is screwed...?

if i highlight something and press backspace, it dosent work. I REALLY NEED THIS... help...

This is usually set here:

Tools -> Options

Click the Edit Tab

Put a check mark in the box for "Typing replaces selection" and click OK.
